You know what’s coming,

don’t you? We talked a little about

bands and girls and I finally told

someone how it felt like I could

taste my own lung every time

I looked at Nina Mercado and then

he said That’s how it was when

I first met Mimi. How’s Mimi,

really? Is she seeing anybody?

Does she talk about me? He actually

said I don’t know what Mimi’s told you

but that chick Lila didn’t mean anything.

We were having problems way before

Lila and I started scorching up

the Holiday Inn. And I remembered

the wedding toast, the fleet of Matt’s

frat brothers leering at Mimi’s garter

sliding down her white leg.

How could I have believed for forty

minutes that Matthew would have headed

all the way out here just to catch up

with me? Asshole. I mean both of us.

Him and me. So I told him Mimi’s

been seeing the guy Dad hired

to cut down the willow tree

in the backyard. That she’d

stared out the window at the guy

for a week before he got to

digging out the stump and she realized

she had to make her move. That

it turned out he worked for NASA

and was only landscaping

to clear his head after the shuttle

disaster. That he was a great guy

and I hadn’t seen her that happy

since and then I apologized

and told him I was late to meet

some friends of mine. And set down

a five for my piece of pie and

Matthew said Jeremy, don’t worry

about it. And I said No. I insist.
