I was entirely wrong about the spell not coming back to bite me in the ass. Every time I called the element, it drained me like I’d run a marathon underwater. Leo worked with me every day for the next week, and still I struggled with my call. I’d avoided Rob, not because I was still mad at him—although I still was, for the record—but for fear he’d pick up on the reason why my water call seemed strong, but only on the surface.
Leo continued to push his call and control to me during training, which should have strengthened my power, but resulted in the exact opposite. I’d had no idea using an incantation to force the element would turn into this.
“Let’s take a break,” he stated and stepped back.
“No. I need to get this.” I brought up my hands and concentrated on the rain falling all around me. “Let’s go again.”
His shoulders sagged. Although this clearly drained him, he didn’t complain and nodded, once again stepping forward. His hands up, he nodded again, giving me the go-ahead to attack.
I focused on the cold knot that had settled in the pit of my stomach ever since I’d cast the spell. The water responded by pulling from the saturated grounds and spinning around Leo like it had done to me when Vanessa attacked. Concentrating to keep control over the call, shaking against it fighting me, I gritted my teeth and brought my hands forward, forcing the water to obey.
He closed his eyes and pulled in a breath, holding it. When his expression tightened in obvious discomfort, I killed my call. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.” He rolled his shoulders and shook the water from his hair but wouldn’t look at me.
“You’re not fine,” I argued and closed the gap between us. His skin was cold, clammy. “Are you sick?”
He laughed hollowly and leaned into my touch. “No. If you’d connected to your element instead of forced it to obey, you’d feel what I feel.”
“Feel what?”
“How wrong this is. Your water call doesn’t want to respond to you, now more than ever. It’s resisting, which makes it even harder for me to control my call.” He backed out of my reach and released a sigh. “Let’s take a break. I really need to rest.”
“I really need to get this. Come on, Leo.”
“Babe.”
“You don’t have to do anything,” I said quickly. “Just stay with me.”
He nodded wearily. “Sure.”
I spent the rest of daylight working on my control. By the time night fell, I was exhausted, but I had better control over my water call. We both agreed to call it quits and turned to leave the field.
Rob and Bryan headed our way, both larger than life as their frames seemed to block out what little light was left of the day. Although Rob was maybe an inch taller, Bryan was bigger, his shoulders wider. I purposely avoided Rob’s gaze and focused on Bryan.
“How’s training?” Bryan asked.
“Watch this.” I called water from the ground, sending it shooting into the air like the fountain in Vegas.
