HOURS LATER, AFTER the coroner drove away and two Ozark City police detectives wrapped up their first round of questions, Spalding and Howard again sat in the back kitchen of the store.
âDoesnât look good, bro,â said Howard. âTrueno boss killed in front of your place. Youâre on their list now, yâknow? Copsâll be watching you too. Anyway, itâs been a long night.â He stretched and walked toward the door. âLong day for you ahead.â
Spalding had agreed to stop past the police station for more questions. âPiece of cake,â he said. âRemember, I used to be the one asking the questions.â
He chuckled again, but his time with the Patrol seemed farther away than ever.
âBy the way,â said Howard, âWhat was that BS about backing Tommyâs show?â
Spalding shrugged.
âBecause last I heard you were scrambling to keep this place open,â said Howard.
Spalding walked over to a chair, brought back the Dooginâs Room Soundtrack.
âLook whatâs on the back.â
Howard turned the album over. âLinda Jean Blevins. 4-10-85. Not long beforeâ-â
âBefore she died,â said Spalding. âAnd now Iâve got Tommyâs signature on the front.â
âI thought Blevins was known for not signing autographs.â
âShe was a recluse. No autographs. Very few publicity photos.â Spalding opened the online auction app on his tablet. âTurns out this record is already rare enough. With Blevinsâs autograph on one side and Tommyâs on the other...take a look.â
Spalding typed in the search.
âHereâs the current high bid on another copy of the record, in lesser condition and autographed by the guy who played Tommyâs dad.
Howard whistled. âSerious money there,â he said.
âWouldâve been a fair start,â said Spalding. âIâm thinking that a fair start might be something Tommy never really had,â said Howard.
Howard looked around the store. âYou too. Your brother left you a clunker here. Sell that record, maybe itâll give you a good shot with Spaldingâs Groove.â
Spalding nodded.
A good shot.
It was all anybody could ask for.
