Chapter 14

“Lianna, get the door. You got company,” Karyn shouted.

“Who is it?” Lianna replied, her tone filled with frustration. She had just spent the last hour trying to quiet Kya down so that she could finish her school assignments.

“Come and see,” Karyn snapped back.

“Ugh, Karyn, you get on my nerves.”

Lianna rolled her eyes and stomped toward the front door. She didn’t understand why her sister always had to make things difficult. She thought, as easily as Karyn announced that someone was at the door, she could have stated who it was. She was always being extra for no apparent reason, other than to frustrate her.

Lianna turned the corner to find Rodney standing by the front door.

“What are you doing here?” she asked angrily.

Rodney shifted his stance and frowned. “What do you mean, what am I doing here? You know why I’m here. I came to see the baby.”

Lianna wanted to put him on edge. The last thing she wanted was for him to leave, but she couldn’t let him know that. She wanted him to regret waiting three weeks to come and see his child. She’d made multiple attempts to get him to come over and express some interest. Rodney on the other hand, always left her disappointed. He showed no concern for their daughter whatsoever. She was genuinely surprised that he had showed up at her home without a recent invitation or notice. She kept her guard up to block any hurt that would come from his visit if things didn’t go well. Waving her hand toward a chair in the living room, she instructed him to have a seat. She then turned and headed to her bedroom to retrieve Kya. Lianna’s stomach fluttered. She knew it was her nerves and wished the feeling would pass. Even with all the ill treatment she’d received from Rodney, she still held feelings in her heart for him.

To her surprise, Kya was awake kicking and playing alone in her crib.

“Hey, mama’s baby girl. Are you playing with your angel?”

Kya turned toward Lianna at the sound of her voice. Lianna picked her up and pulled her close to her heart. She gently bounced her in her arms while walking back toward the living room.

“Guess who’s here to see you,” she asked as if Kya could respond to her.

Entering the living room, she found Rodney sitting on the couch peering at the television. Karyn was watching a reality show based on the lives of well-known rappers. Lianna figured it must have been pretty interesting because it had Karyn’s full attention as well as Rodney’s. He didn’t notice Lianna had returned with the baby. Clearing her throat loudly, she gained his attention. Rodney quickly turned his head in her direction. He adjusted the red suede and leather throw pillows so that Lianna could sit down with the baby next to him. A look of pride swept across his face.

Once she was seated, Lianna placed Kya in his arms.

“Aww man, she is so pretty,” he said to Lianna with a wide grin.
