During the next several years, I spent a lot of time alone meandering the streets of New Orleans and the surrounding area. I had a hunger to know this town like my hometown. I loved driving in the early morning. I was nearing my mid-thirties and found freedom in my existence.
Being alive was good enough.
One early Sunday morning, I took The Causeway to a small town on the other side as I noted the small diner was beckoning my eyes with the flashing open sign. There were a few cars, but it wasn’t so crowded I would have to wait.
I parked the car and hustled inside. There was a chill in the air, and I hated how achy and old the cold made me feel. “Good Morning!” the young woman chirped from the bar. “Can I get you a cup of coffee?”
I took a seat at the bar. There was another man—a trucker by the looks of him—eating at the opposite end. “I’d love a cup of coffee!”
Sweet looking with an angelic face, she grabbed the pot and filled my cup. I was awestruck by her vibrant energy. “What’s your name?”
“I’m Ashley Crandall,” she volunteered with a smile. “My parents own the diner.”
“And how old are you Ashley Crandall?”
“I’m eighteen.” Her innocent blue eyes blinked at me. “How old are you?”
I laughed. “Old enough to know better.”
“Ahh,” she said with a grin. “Easy excuse.” She scurried off to hand the trucker his bill. He handed her a twenty, and she zipped past checking me out. She retrieved his change from the register, and on her way back, she leaned across the bar and whispered, “Old Fuddy Duddy.” She winked.
I grinned as I studied her backside. “What time do you get out of here?”
“Noon, but I have to get back up to Baton Rouge for classes tomorrow.”
“I’ll drive you,” I suggested, scanning over the menu. I peered up and caught her stunned expression. “But you have to promise to behave and keep your hands to yourself.”
“I could say the same thing to you,” she challenged as we sparked with immediate chemistry.
“Thirty-three,” I said, extending my hand. “My name is Dominic. Friends call me Dom.”
“Could be worse,” she insulted as I chuckled. There was a magic in Ashley that fired up the young man I lost after the wreck.
I had breakfast. With the diner filling up, I tapped a hundred on the counter and said, “Keep the change. I’ll be in the lot at noon if you’re interested.”
Her shocked stare stole my heart. “Thank you, Sir.”
And then she stole everything else.
“You’re welcome, baby.”
At 12:23, she headed out, stripping off her apron and pulling down her long brown hair. Propped against the hood, I smoked a cigarette as I contemplated just taking what was being offered. To once again do something rebellious and free—like randomly leaving for the military—or in this case, doing Ashley.
“Hi there,” I said with a smile as her fingers slid over mine and she stole my smoke. I had to hand it to this girl; she had balls.
