For the next four days, I left my quarters early in the morning to scurry along the corridors to the kitchen, hoping to attract as little male Kylen attention as possible. Once in the kitchen, I would grab my sack of vegetables and drag it to the office at the back where I would set to work with my trusty peeler. Manual work has been such a change of pace for me compared to my work as a controller, and I have had so much more time to think about things as I handled the vegetables. For the first time in recent memory, I am not rushing around trying to get as much done as quickly as possible. Perhaps most importantly, for the first time in my life, it did not matter whether I did a crappy job or not. It was food for soldiers. They would not care about a little skin left on a vegetable here or there because they would just scarf it all down regardless.

No soldiers had bothered me, and none of the kitchen staff bothered me after that first day either. Veesh made sure everyone was gone before I left the office again at the end of the day to clean up the canteen tables and floor.

I was getting used to my routine, and the lewd comments had trickled down, perhaps because they were more familiar with me. This morning, Veesh informed me that the Kylen Federation Crown would be docking at Kymbizia Space Port to take on supplies. Everybody would be leaving the vessel for some leisure time.

“Will you be going, too?” Veesh asks me. “Has Argath asked you to translate?”

“No. And I don’t think it’s a good idea for me to leave the ship. I’ll stay here and try to figure out some of those other utensils in the kitchen.”

“As you wish,” Veesh says before closing the office door.

Prince Argath has not bothered to check up on me in person a single time that I have been helping in the kitchen. I did not think he had forgotten me. Instead, he was probably receiving updates from Veesh, and likely giving me the time and space I needed.

Having finished with the breakfast run, I leave the back office and go through the kitchen to clean up the canteen tables for the day as everyone would be having the rest of their meals on the space port. With all the plates and cutlery in the washer, I take a closer look at all these different utensils. They are so unlike the ones on Earth. I am sure they were to be found on Salem Space Port along with a whole bunch of other utensils to cook the different ingredients from other planets for visitors, but I never had any reason to visit the kitchen on Salem. I just ate in the cafeteria with all the others. I think of them now as I run my fingers along the different surfaces of the strange items in this kitchen, feeling the different textures when one of the cooks suddenly appears around the door.
