Chapter 10

Blake

“Who were you talking to at this hour?” The snarky comment took me by surprise as I walked back into my bedroom. I had been dating Laura for only a couple of weeks, and to be honest, it was a surprise to me that it had even lasted this long. She was pretty, in a sorority girl type of way, but she was young. She couldn’t even get into my bar, and that wasn’t from lack of begging. No way in hell that was going to happen, though. We ran our bar by the book, and would never knowingly serve an underage person, no matter how much she pouted.

Laura was fun, had an amazing body, and the sex was good, but that was about as deep as our connection got. “That was Avery,” I answered nonchalantly, knowing shit was about to hit the fan, but ignoring the eye roll she sent in my direction.

“Don’t you think it’s a bit needy of her to be calling you at three in the morning?” Laura fluffed her pillow before laying her head back down. I really had no desire to engage her. This wasn’t an argument that I wanted or needed right now, and I could guarantee Laura wouldn’t like the outcome if she continued to push.

“Laura, let it go,” I warned.

“I don’t think I should have to.” She sat up again. “I mean, why would you leave your girlfriend in bed to talk to another woman? That’s just wrong.” She crossed her arms over her chest.

I squeezed my eyes shut. I really didn’t fucking need this right now, but it didn’t seem like she was going to let it go. “First, you are not my girlfriend. We are just seeing each other,” I corrected her like an asshole.

“Same difference,” she snapped.

“Not even close. I don’t have girlfriends, and I am not exclusive. I told you that from the beginning. Second, I don’t choose any girl over my friends, bottom line, and Avery is my friend, so if this is going to be a problem for you, you need to let me know right now.” She recoiled at my words.

I could see the wheels turning in her head, and I knew she wasn’t done. I opened the door for a fight, and she latched on like a pit bull. I knew how this would play out. I was going to be a dick, and she would leave here hating me, but fuck it. I wasn’t joking when I said I didn’t choose girls over my friends. Avery may be a girl, too, but she was the only girl who held the status as a friend with me, and no matter how good of a lay this chick was, there was no way in hell I would put Avery on the back burner for her ... or anyone else for that matter.

“Fine, but you need to think about what is really important in your life. No girl is going to want to date you when you are all buddy-buddy with another girl.
