As if he had a sixth sense, Kyle made himself available to Tony at precisely the right moment. At first Tony was angry when he stepped out of the shadows one night as he was leaving the office late.

'Are you following me and my family?'

'It's good to see you too, Tony. How are you?'

'Tell me, do you follow us? My son says he's seen you. This is a business arrangement only. You have the keys, you let yourself in. That was our arrangement. I don't want you following my family.'

'I'm not following your family, Tony. I live in the area. I'm around and about doing business, just like you. I've seen you too – I might ask if you're following me?'

'Oh, come off it.'

'Well, the answer is no. And at your request, we are slightly more than business partners now, Tony. I'm thinking of the tragic death of Susan's tutor—'

'That was an accident.'

'But was it, Tony? Was it an accident? Suicide, they said at the time. What could have driven a man like that – with his promising academic career ahead of him and a wonderful student like Susan beginning to experience her first breakthrough as an author – what might have driven a man like that to suicide, Tony?'

Tony said nothing. He was pleased that Kyle had shown up. He'd been wondering how he could contact him.

'I need your help again,' he began.

'And I need to talk business first,' Kyle replied, looking around the office, scanning the year planner on the wall, picking up and putting down invoices that were piled up on one of the desks, ready for the next day.

'It's good to see you expanding here. That contract with the supermarket chain – you must be very pleased. This place is quite some size now. But I need to know it won't become a 24-hour operation. I need your guarantee that I will continue to get a minimum of six hours' access at night. We've been doing this for thirteen years. We've been business partners for over a decade. And it was my partnership with you that got you out of the mess you were in.'

'It's hardly a partnership, Kyle. You make it sound like we signed a contract.'

'We do have an unwritten contract, Tony, whether you like it or not. I think that troublesome neighbour of yours would agree that we had some sort of arrangement. And Steve's headmaster would confirm that too. Oh, and the Staples family, remember them? Their lad has been in court three times in the past year. He took a very different path from your kids. I'm certain he'd say that we had some kind of business arrangement.'

'Yes, Kyle. I promise I won't do anything to upset the status quo. But I'm going to need your help with something.'

When he'd expanded into the two new units, Tony hadn't been so foolish as to kill the golden goose. He'd left the car park to the original unit fenced off. It remained locked up and clean at night, supposedly to prevent cross-contamination.
