Chapter Five

“You’re going where?”

Coal grimaced, wishing he hadn’t told his brother. Except, he’d never lied to Dan and gotten away with it. He’d stopped trying over a decade before. That didn’t make hearing Dan’s incredulous question any easier to process... or to answer the ones he knew would be coming next.

“I’m going to a wrestling match at the college,” Coal repeated. “I can’t pick up flowers for you tonight, but I can tell you which ones to buy.”

Coal’s hope that returning Dan’s focus to his reason for calling would save him the trouble of answering too many questions failed. “Why would you go to a wrestling match?” Dan asked, confusion in his tone. “I’m pretty sure you would have told me if you had any interest in wrestling.”

“I was invited,” Coal admitted. Realizing he needed to just get it over with, he quickly added, “By Hank Parsons, the wrestling coach.”

Grimacing, Coal listened to a very pregnant pause. It wasn’t a long pause, fortunately. He already felt sweat beading at his temples, and he didn’t want to have to wash his face and redo his make-up.

“Coal.” Dan somehow managed to growl his name as if it were a warning. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“I think I am giving a hot guy a chance to prove himself,” Coal responded slowly. He’d spent all Thursday evening tossing and turning in his bed. After jacking off to the memory of Hank’s kiss, he’d stared up at the ceiling wondering if the man would actually admit Coal was his date. There was only one way to find out... and he did want to find out. “He... made advances. I want to—”

“I’ve never heard of Hank Parsons,” Dan cut in. “Is he new?”

“Yeah,” Coal confirmed. “Started this year.”

“And you’re sure this isn’t, uh—” Dan paused a few seconds, then muttered a couple of curses under his breath. “Are you certain you’ll be safe?”

Dan had helped bandage Coal’s wounds or provided ice packs for bruises on more than one occasion. He’d always been there any time Coal had gotten into trouble with some bigoted prick. His brother had even beaten up a few, too.

Coal prayed it wouldn’t be anything like that this time. “I can’t remain celibate the rest of my life,” he muttered dryly. Still, he knew his brother was only looking out for him, and he did actually appreciate it. “But if it will make you feel any better, I will never turn off my phone and always answer, even if I’m—” He whistled suggestively.

Dan groaned. “TMI, bro,” he grumbled. “But okay.”

“Thanks for permission, Dad,” Coal teased, smirking. “Now, do you want to know about the flowers or not? Because I have to leave in ten.”

“Yeah,” Dan responded. “Tell me what kind of flowers to ask for.”
