“SOMETHING sure smells good,” Dan commented to Luke as they walked through the glass doors of the HoneyDew Diner.

“Sarah Jean said the new cook she just hired is actually very good.”

“Cook?” Dan smirked. “I thought you said he was a chef.”

Luke winked at his friend. “Nah, man, a chef wants to be paid too much money. This dude is a cook!”

Sarah Jean looked up at the sound of her husband’s laugh. She placed drinks on a table for three customers and hurried over. “Hey sweetie.” Sarah Jean pecked Luke on the lips and turned to look up at Dan. “How y’all doin’?”

“Good, darlin’… but your partner here is PMSing still.” Luke nodded in Dan’s direction.

Sarah Jean stood on tiptoe and kissed Dan’s cheek. “Awww, poor baby.”

“No biggie.” Dan shrugged. “New ‘chef’ working out okay?”

“You’ve been talking to Luke.” Sarah Jean laughed. “You’ll see for yourself shortly. I’ll get you something to drink in a bit.”

“No rush, darlin’.” Luke ambled over to the booth that was reserved every night for them.

Dan followed his friend, frowning as he noticed that someone was sitting in their booth. “What the…. Whit? What the hell are you doing here?”

“You going to duck out on me like you did at the garage? Or are you going to talk to me longer than four minutes this time?” Whit asked.

“You got no room to talk about cutting and running,” Dan snapped. He turned sharply to Luke. “What is he doing here?”

“Now, Dan,” Sarah Jean soothed as she moved around him, placed two large glasses of sweet tea with lemon wedges on the table, and hustled away to tend to her other customers. She returned to the table and added two plates from her tray, sliding one in front of Whit and another in front of the empty seat facing him. “This is braised Angus beef ribs on rice.”

“It looks delicious,” Whit murmured. “Thank you.”

“Sure does, baby.” Luke slid an arm around his wife. He looked at his friend. “Whit wants to talk to you.”

Dan gave Luke an annoyed look. “No thank you, Dr. Phil. I don’t need to talk.”

“Yes, you do,” Luke insisted. “And you need to talk to him.”

Dan scoffed. “Because that worked out so well for me before.”

“Go on. Sit down, Dan.” Luke pushed him into the booth.

Sarah Jean tugged on Luke’s arm. “Come on, sweetie, your dinner’s over here.”

After a few minutes of silently staring at each other across the table, Whit smiled. “You look good.”

“Where is this going, Whit?” Dan picked up a fork and poked at the rice. He stared down at the perfectly cooked meal with no appetite. He glanced at Whit to find the other man staring at him like he was a succulent piece of beef. Dan sampled the warm rice soaked in a peppery au jus and made umm-ummm noises. He smiled with satisfaction as Whit’s eyes darkened to a deep blue.

Whit reached for his glass of tea and took a long drink before setting the glass back down.
