CHAPTER ELEVEN

The slithering sheen of the black yellow striped snake, the coil and rattle of tails unseen. I could only stand at the fringe. I wanted words to fill the stealth, noise to comfort as blankets and cheap hotels. Walking…waiting…away from the naked grasp of judgmental trees. The thin of my jacket, the bare of my skin, newborn spring's cold teasing kiss. Walking under the light of the round cheese watching the stretch of our shadows from long to short. Cars like too busy cousins running past us taunting.

"How do you know you're dead?" I asked just to say something fighting the aftershock of the passing cars, the gusts of wind that pushed me with invisible hands further off the shoulder.

"I know." Short and simple, the accused on the stand.

"Then how do I know I'm alive?" I said, stumbling in the loose gravel at the snake's coil.

The why don't you shut up sigh, the stop being a whiny little bitch look caught in the glisten of his eyes.

"Maybe it's all subjective," he replied. The top rung of the ladder I could not reach.

"Subjective?"

"It's how we perceive it."

"Uh," was all I could utter.

He kicked his boot through the loose gravel scattering them across the snake's skin. Frustrated, weary, sick of me, I never want the truth, just the answers to questions I would never ask of another.

"No one knows for sure," he said. "We all exist but we don't know how and we don't know why. Just because I'm a ghost does not make me any different than you or anyone else."

"I read the newspaper," I insisted. "You're dead."

"You believe everything you read?" he chuckled, the kind of chuckle that gave me chills, the kind of chuckle that says to a mother I just ate your baby alive.

Silence was Danny.

"How do you know you're not dead and I'm alive?"

"Well I don't."

"Can you prove it?"

"No, I can't prove it," I replied, arms folded in the no.

"It's scary to think about it isn't it?" he said.

Silence was Danny.

"Death doesn't give you the answers," he said. "It gives you the questions."

"Are you always gonna mind fuck me?"

"I'm not mind fucking you, I'm just giving you the answers you can't see," he replied.

Not the black and white, the gray he so loved. I didn't want to see.

At first I thought it was a UFO, the lights beaming down for a third kind encounter but the flashing blue eyes were the black and white he hated and I feared. We stopped on the shoulder of the road when the highway patrol car cruised beside us. The passenger window down as the patrolman leaned over inspecting us.

"Gentlemen," he said with a cautious stare, "everything okay?"

The flashes of blue hid his face, only quick images of the chubby cherry face and the comb over.

"Yes sir," Blue Eyes said as he wrestled the duffle bag to the ground.

"Cold night to be walking out here on the highway," he said. I knew the routine, two kinds of silvers, the ones that hated you and the ones that fucked you, not too many gray.
