The living room is a mess. Ripped and crinkled wrapping paper litter the room. Mom and Dad are buried on the couch together under their new gifts. Maddie leans against Mom’s legs and plays with her new Barbie while baby Ken plays with the paper. Arthur reads the box from his back massager in the recliner in the corner and Kaden sits beside me with his hand interlocked with mine.

“I think that’s everything,” Olivia says from the floor by the tree. “There’s nothing left.”

“Wait, not everyone gave their gifts,” Mom says. “Olivia, you got me the bathrobe and your father got me the kettle. Charlotte, dear, where are your presents?”

I sit up in bed with a jolt. How could I forget the presents? Am I really that self-absorbed that I thought I’d go home for Christmas without bringing any gifts for my family? I’m a horrible person.

“What’s the matter? What time is it?” Kaden asks in a groggy voice from the floor. My sudden movement must’ve woken him. The sun has just started to peek through the blinds.

“I forgot the presents.”

“In New York?” he asks with a yawn. “So send them when we get back.” He rolls over.

I reach down and shake him. “No, I never bought any. Kaden, Maddie’s going to hate me if I don’t get her anything for Christmas. And I can only imagine the drama that will ensue when Mom realizes I never got anyone anything.”

He rolls over and looks at me through slits in his eyelids. “She’s not going to hate you and your mother just needs to chill.”

“Kaden, imagine if you woke up on Christmas without any gifts?”

“She’ll get gifts.”

“That’s not the point. I want them to have something to open.”

“So we’ll go shopping sometime.”

I lay back. Yeah, there’s still two days until Christmas. I have time. Not much, but I can work with it.

I lean over the edge again. “What about wrapping? I need to do that.”

“So pay for gift wrapping.”

“But then it’ll look like I forgot.”

He covers his eyes with his hands. “So we’ll pick up some wrapping paper and wrap them before we come back. How’s that sound?”

Slowly, I lean back again. “Yeah, maybe that’ll work.”

Getting out of the house and away from everyone else will give my mother less of a chance to figure out that Kaden’s not my boyfriend.
