THIRTY-ONE

Jackie was at his desk reading the sports section of the New York Post when I flung his office door open so hard that it bounced against the wall and slammed back closed behind me.

“Answer me one simple question,” I shouted at him, face red with anger, spit shooting from my lips. “Are you fuckin’ stupid?”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa.” Jackie stood and cocked his head. He wasn’t used to anyone, especially me, talking to him like this. “What did you just say?”

“Both of these guys you sent me just happened to fall down on the same exact job site as Salvatore Tangelino? Are you fuckin’ crazy? Do you want to get caught?”

Jackie walked out from behind his desk and approached me.

“First of all, calm down before you say something you’ll regret,” Jackie said calmly as he flipped an unlit cigarette between his lips. “I figured that the Tangelino case went so well, I’d send these guys to the same construction site as him. We already know that the foreman ain’t too sharp because he filled out an accident report for Tangelino, no questions asked. And we know that the insurance company for that site likes to settle. I was using my head. I’d think you’d be grateful I thought it through.”

Jackie lit his cigarette, breathed in deeply, and exhaled a stream of smoke that rose just above my head. He had a very satisfied look on his face, as if he had it all figured out. But what he didn’t know could have filled a warehouse.

“Insurance companies aren’t run by fuckin’ morons, you jackass,” I yelled. “Three accidents within five months of each other? All of them fall from scaffold cases? All of them hurt on their first day on the job? And to top it off, they’re all represented by the same goddamn attorney? You don’t think the carrier will look into this?”

“If anyone starts askin’ questions, we’ll say these guys knew Tangelino from the neighborhood and they asked him which attorney he used when he got hurt,” Jackie pooh-poohed me.

“It’s not that simple; we could get caught!”

“We won’t get caught.”

“Can you promise me that?”

“Lower your voice,” Jackie warned.

“Fuck you!” I shouted. “You can forget this entire thing! I’m not representing these guys. It’s too goddamn dangerous!”

I turned and went for the door but, before I could reach it, I felt a force lift me off my feet and drive me face-first into the wall. I was spun around, totally dazed, to find Jackie holding me by the lapels of my suit jacket. He had me jacked up against the wall so the tips of my toes barely touched the floor.

“Now you listen to me, you miserable little fuck!” Jackie whispered in my ear. “You can piss and moan all you want, but you’re gonna represent those two guys or I’ll fuckin’ kill you! I am not fuckin’ around! I will stab you in the heart until you are fuckin’ dead! Do you understand me?”

I nodded silently. Jackie glared at me.
