After a long day with no lunch, all I wanted was a cold beer, easy food, and a soft bed. I headed straight home. I grabbed the bag of receipts I’d hustled from Quitman’s apartment manager, and walked toward my apartment. As I came around the corner, I saw my landlord, Ernest Withers, with his hand on my doorknob, a key in his hand. My attempt to duck out of sight was futile.

“Luca Bennett, get your ass back out here. You think you can ignore me forever?”

I could only hope. I willed him away to no avail. Didn’t matter how many guns I had on me, this guy made me want to run like a school girl. I silently ciphered the contents of my coffee can. I could cover what I owed, and it was time to get him off my back. I looked at his hand, still on my door handle. I didn’t want him in my place. I rented for the convenience. For the lack of commitment, I was willing to trade privacy and solitude. A little anyway, but I didn’t want him in my place.

“Give me five minutes and I’ll bring it to you.”

He let a few beats pass before he dropped his hand. He walked past me muttering. “Five minutes. If you’re not there in five minutes, I’ll beat your door down.” I ignored his ramblings and walked to my apartment. I turned the knob, opened the door, and stepped across the threshold. Just before I shut the door behind me I heard him toss out, “‘Course, I won’t have to beat it down, since you can’t be bothered locking it in the first place.” I shook my head. Crazy old man. I always locked my door. He’d already forgotten he’d just unlocked it himself. Or had he? I turned back, intending to ask him what the hell he meant, but the door clicked shut and a large weight crashed on the back of my head. I blacked out.
