Chapter Eight
Torin stared at the low ceiling as if it had all the answers to his problems. Or, really, just one problem. Rain. He’d opened up to his new pilot earlier in a way he hadn’t with anyone in a very long time. What was he doing? Trusting a virtual stranger? The other man liked to throw it in his face that Torin didn’t give him answers, but what had Rain offered? Torin didn’t even know how old he was or if he was an only child or even whether Ophelia 9 had always been home or not.
The bigger question, though, was why the hell did he care?
Chances were that after Nephele, Rain would jump at the chance to get himself as far from Annie and her criminal crew as possible. He was so idealistic, Torin couldn’t imagine a man like that being content to wander the universe looking for the next job that might or might not go against every bit of Rain’s moral fiber.
Why did he have to have moral fiber, for God’s sake? But Torin’s inner voice told him he probably wouldn’t find the man nearly so intriguing or likable if Rain didn’t.
That was pretty much what it came down to, he supposed. Rain might be flying a mercenary pirate ship at the moment, but he’d never be one of them. He was a good man, and he had no place in this life. Torin was going to drop him on the closest, safest planet he could find first thing after they got to Nephele. Rain didn’t belong here. Torin did.
He glanced up at the sound of slight scuffling outside his door. He didn’t need to even question who it was. He sighed and sat up just as a soft knock sounded. Pushing to his feet, he took a deep breath and went to slide the door open.
Rain stood there, leaning against the frame, hair a spiky, overlong tangle about his head, eyes sleepy. How could he do that? Make Torin’s stomach flip and his balls tighten with just a simple look? It wasn’t like the man was even trying to be sexy right now. Rain didn’t need to try.
“Can I help you?”
Rain lifted one shoulder. “Dunno.”
It was an honest answer. Hell if Torin knew, either. He took a step back and gestured. “Come in.”
Rain stepped through and Torin slid the door panel down and shut again. Suddenly his cabin felt tinier than it usually did. Rain filled up the space as if he was twice the size he actually was. All that presence that crowded in around Torin and made him jumpy.
They didn’t say anything for several moments, just stood there, gazes locked, as if they could silently read each other and all the answers they wanted would be revealed.
Rain gave up first, leaning in and brushing his lips across Torin’s. It wasn’t possessive or demanding or any of the things Rain’s kisses usually were. Instead it was probing, gentle, curious. As if he could decipher the puzzle through a simple kiss.
