“When will Marcus and Ricoh be back?”

Kellan looked up at Nate’s question. He was currently idly flicking through the TV channels. He thought Nate had been asleep. He looked at the clock on his phone. “Any time, really.” He watched Nate glance uninterested at the TV. “Are you hungry?”

Nate looked at him and laughed a little self-consciously. Kellan clicked the TV off to give Nate his full attention. He seemed restless. “You’re bored, aren’t you?” Kellan said in wonder. “It wasn’t a criticism,” he added gently when Nate shot him an alarmed look.

He raised his arm invitingly and Nate sank onto the sofa and cuddled close. “I’m sorry,” Nate whispered.

“Sorry?” Kellan repeated, appalled. “You have absolutely nothing to be sorry for.” He dropped a kiss on Nate’s head.

“But you’re all stuck up here most of the time, babysitting me,” Nate said. “If I was stronger, you wouldn’t have to do that.” His gray eyes darkened. “I want to be normal,” he whispered, and looked up desolately at Kellan. “I didn’t want it back, but now I’m not so sure.”

“Your wolf?” Kellan pushed the light brown hair out of the way of Nate’s eyes. He wished desperately he could brush the hurt away alongside it. “How do you fancy taking a walk downstairs to get a coffee? You’ve met Lilly, and I know you love that banana bread she does.” Kellan held his breath. “Do you want me to call downstairs and see how busy it is?”

Nate opened his mouth, and Kellan expected an immediate denial. “Can you ask who’s down there?”

Kellan’s heart jumped in delight, and he reached for the phone. He couldn’t believe Nate had agreed to go downstairs. Were they finally making progress?

Lilly answered.

“Lilly? It’s Kellan. We were just wondering how busy it was down there. Nate is hankering after some of your banana bread.” Kellan grinned when he heard Lilly’s excited squeal, and even Nate giggled. Lilly confirmed the place was mostly empty, and explained there was something happening at the school. Kellan hung up. “It’s quiet. The Alphas have gone to see something the kids are putting on at the school. Apparently there’s an end of semester concert and they’re all practicing like mad. Marcus and Ricoh should be back soon. Do you want to wait for them?”

Nate chewed his lip. “No,” he said shyly. “Let’s surprise them.”

Kellan was thrilled. Since Aden had started seeing him, Nate seemed to be getting a little stronger every day. He fussed a little with Nate’s jacket.

“You do know I’m only one year younger than you,” Nate said solemnly.

Kellan blushed, and let his hands fall. “I’m s—”

But Kellan didn’t get the apology out because Nate pressed a slim finger against his lips. “Don’t you dare apologize for taking care of me,” he said determinedly.

Kellan smiled, and grabbed both of Nate’s hands. “Then promise me something. Anything — and I mean anything — upsets you down there you tell me straight away.”

Nate leaned forward and brushed his lips across Kellan’s mouth. Kellan groaned and felt his cock tingle a little.
