Chapter Twelve

Excitement flared in the marrow of Silas’s bones. How long had it been since he had had a challenge?

We have waited a long time for this. For him. Silas smiled.

Too long, the voice agreed.

The air rang out with the echoes of battle. The trees reflected the light of magic as screams, war cries, and last pleas sounded. Metal clashed as the pounding of feet and powerful blows drew closer.

Silas arched a brow at the sudden uptick in noise. “I see you brought backup to a losing battle.”

“I can see your arrogance. Feel it in the air. That is not a wise thing to have when going into war.”

Silas chuckled as his attention slid back to the enemy before him. “You call it arrogance; I call it a lifetime of experience.”

The man shrugged. “I suppose we shall find out.”

With a flourish, Silas flicked his wrist to the side, releasing the clasp and separating his blade into two. “I have waited a long time for this moment.” His eyes drifted to the figure that stood within the darkness of the forest. “And for you.”

“They call you Ghost, but what is your true name?”

Silas sucked in a surprised breath, thankful the mask concealed the action. How long had it been since someone had asked his name? How long since he had been called anything other than Ghost? “Ghost is who I am now. Who I was before no longer exists.”

The man shrugged. “Then I suppose it is only fair to let you know mine. I am Callen.”

Silas frowned. “And why is that important?”

Callen smiled. “Because I am the man that is going to end your haunting of this Realm.”

“And you called me arrogant.”

The silver of Callen’s eyes blazed as he lifted his hand, his fingers stroking the air in a come-hither motion. “Shall we find out?”

Silas twisted his blades to ride the sides of his arms and launched himself forward. His body moved in a blur, his opponent coming closer before the next beat of his heart. He watched with a satisfied smile as Callen stood frozen in place. Until suddenly, the world before him slowed. Callen’s eyes shifted to the side, capturing Silas in an instant. Silas never saw him move, never caught the twitch of muscle that would reveal an intent of a counter, only felt the shock of sudden blazing pain rupture his body.

For a moment, everything was still and utterly silent. A soft breeze rustled his hair, and a choked cough brought blood pouring from his mouth, sending the world into action once more. The sounds of the night flared in his ears. Silas blinked. Callen smirked, his fist resting in the air between them. Silas’s eyes shifted down to find the earth had been torn apart by a single stone spike. A spike that had pierced through his abdomen and exited just beneath his shoulder. His fingers felt cold, his body weak, and his mind consumed with unfamiliar confusion.

Callen lowered his fist, the spike mimicking the action and disappearing back into whence it came.
