“You could’ve dressed a little sluttier. You know, make the world really believe I would fuck you.”

Bile rises in my throat as flashes come from a camera. I keep my eyes on my menu, smiling as I speak like I’m gunning for an Oscar.

I am, though. I will never let Hunter know that he affects me in even the smallest of ways. Because I want to take everything from him. That’s how much I hate him. But tonight, I’m just starting with his glib satisfaction.

“Well, you’ve already had one Macallan and Coke, disguised as only a Coke, so I’d say the chance of you raping me is slim to none. I think we’ve come to learn that about you. Remember?”

Saying it out loud makes the inside of me shake. But Hunter can’t see that, so it's okay.

My eyes lift to his as I shrug my shoulders like I’m flirting, batting my eyelashes.

“Hunter”—I bite my bottom lip leaning forward—“I’m a whole kind of bitch you aren’t prepared for now. This version of me fights dirty. So be very careful, or I’ll cut your dick off with the butter knife when nobody’s looking.”

“Noted.” He winks, going along with the façade, but I see the worry in his eyes.

Oh, you should believe me, Hunter.

“Good, because I’d never lie to you about how much I despise you.”

I giggle before looking back down at the menu.

His mother booked us a fucking table by the window at Bagatelle. A posh restaurant in the meatpacking district. I’m actually disappointed, it’s just so obvious, and yet the cameras haven’t stopped flashing.

Idiots.

Tomorrow, I’m sure we’ll be all over the society section with this bullshit. My mind wanders to Calder, momentarily wondering if he’ll see these photos. Fuck. I hate this.

The waiter comes to the table to take our order, so I choose the first thing I see because, frankly, my stomach soured the minute I saw Hunter’s fucking face.

He does the same, then lifts his glass, nodding to the waiter as I turn my head from the window ticking over the other diners. People are everywhere. You’re fine.

He takes a deep breath before leaning sideways to pull his phone from his Armani slacks.

“Seriously? Nice manners. Eat fast, and then you can go and check your phone for whatever STD’s texted you lately. In the meantime, can’t you just play along?”

Every word is said with a smile. I pick up my water, taking a sip as Hunter stares at me.

“Yeah, Freckles, I can play along. Like a fucking champ. Let’s see if you can too.”

“Eww. Don’t call me that.”

He chuckles, but it's dark, off in some way. My brows draw together as my lips part, but he stops the words from coming out of my mouth.

He holds his phone out toward me, covering it from the glass, so nobody gets a photo, motioning with his head for me to lean in. The smile on his face says he’s flirting, being cheeky, but the image in front of me is Piper.

She’s standing on a sidewalk in a tank top.
