When they returned, Lorne distributed the sandwiches to her colleagues. Joanna was the one who got off her backside to make the coffee for all of them. Back at Tina’s home, Sally’s had remained untouched, so a fresh brew was most welcome.

Lorne broke off a sliver of her ham and cheese sandwich and slid it across the desk to Sally on a napkin. “Only a small piece, you can’t run on fresh air all day.”

Smiling, Sally scoffed the granary snack and thought as she chewed.

“What are you thinking, or is that too obvious?” Lorne asked.

“There’s more to this than meets the eye, but without a definitive answer about the identification, we’re up shit creek. Sod it, we should have dropped over to the lab while we were out.”

Her partner squirmed. “My fault, I was thinking about my stomach as usual.”

“Nonsense, don’t ever think that, we’re entitled to eat, even if it’s on the go. Jordan, did you manage to ring the lab earlier, as requested?”

He slapped his hands over his eyes and groaned. “Shit, I knew there was something else I had to do, boss. I suppose I got distracted with the information I was collecting and it slipped my mind.” He reached for the phone on his desk. “I’ll do it right away.”

“No, you won’t, I will. Carry on, folks. I’ll have a chat with the pathologist, and then we’ll have an open discussion about the information we’ve gathered so far.” Sally picked up her mug and carried it into her office. She sat behind her desk and glanced at the cloudless blue sky, envious of those who were able to have outdoor jobs and weren’t stuck inside every day.

Daft mare, I’ve only just come back. Granted, I was in and out of houses all morning and mostly driving around in my car, but at least I felt some rays on my face.

She dialled the number of the lab. One of the male technicians answered the call and told her that Pauline would ring her back within ten minutes as she was in the process of finishing off a PM, not related to her investigation. Sally sat there, waiting, tapping her pen on the desk. After boredom hit the next level, she picked up her mobile and called Simon. “Hey, you, it’s me. Can you talk?”

“For five minutes. We’re waiting for the estate agent to show her face.”

“Likewise, I mean I’ve only got five minutes. I’m awaiting a call back from Pauline, the new pathologist.”

He laughed. “I’m well aware who Pauline is.”

“Sorry, my mind is in some kind of vortex this afternoon.”

“How come? Do you need to chat about it?”

“Not really, it’s all in hand. I’ll fill you in when I get home tonight. I needed to hear your voice and know that everything was going well with you today.”

“It is. Another project finished. Tony is going around making a snagging list now.”

“Is this the property that was vandalised a few months ago?”

“No, that one sold last week. This is the house we made into three one-bedroom flats.
