The first part of the mission went according to plan as each man, covered by the remaining soldiers, their eyes straining to track their comradeâs progress, made a dash into the inky night. As the men advanced, they were covered from both directions. Until, finally, it was Bucky's turn. Protected by his men in front, but exposed at the rear, he scuttled sideways like a hermit crab maneuvering across the stark expanse of a tidal pool ever on the lookout for dangerâgun poised, body swiveling regularly in the direction from which heâd come. Once reunited, the men rested a few moments in the thicket before repeating the maneuver. The same sequence followed: Ricky, Moose, Tommy, Steve, Ray, Vernon, Peewee and so on down the line. No big deal.
Ricardo crouched at the edge of the bushes nervously waiting for Buckyâs signal. Nobody liked to be the lead man. It was a rotating honor. Bucky nodded and Ricky sprang into the darkness. Fifteen seconds later, there was a crashing sound coming from the direction toward which heâd run, the heart-stopping sound of rocks and dirt tumbling and breaking up. This peculiar sound, terrifying in its unexpectedness in the midst of the still night, subsided and was replaced instead by a curious, almost inaudible, whirring sound. Then, all was quiet once more. The minutes dragged by slowly as the men tried to identify the cause of the disturbance, thinking all the while of Ricky, alone on what now seemed like the other side of an enormous chasm. And, then, at last, the welcome warble, like the soft call of a dove, penetrated the darkness signaling that all was well.
The balance of their progress toward the building took place without incident. Soon, the men were united again in a corner room of the bombed-out structure. Ricky related the cause of the crashing sound: he had apparently alarmed a large, roosting bird into flight. In the process, several large chunks of masonry had come unlodged from the roof, just missing him as he scurried for cover below. The men laughed at thisâat themselves for the fear such a benign occurrence had provoked. Bucky then set about submitting a progress report. Word came back: they were to split up and fully investigate the target location. Once they established that the VC had moved on and the building was secured, the men could take a break, catch up on some Zs, and grab a bite while they awaited further orders.
