Chapter Five

Dusk seasoned the early evening sky with shades of violet, indigo and burnt orange as Ed drove their borrowed BMW through the open gates of Winterstone Grange. The car belonged to a friend who ran a clothing shop close to the restaurant. They hadn’t wanted to use either of their own cars in case they were recognized on the way in. Josh had originally suggested that they take a taxi or hire a limo for the night, but Ed had vetoed the idea.

‘If we need to make a quick getaway, we’ll need our own car,’ he had said.

‘Quick getaway. You make it sound like we’re the criminals.’

‘Tonight, we are, but small scale when you consider what we’re searching for.’

Something tightened in Josh’s belly. The procession of fancy cars slowly moved up the drive. There will be no speedy getaways for anyone if this keeps up. Ahead, the Grange looked magnificent against the darkening sky. All the window shutters were open, spilling light from within. Flaming lanterns flickered alongside the drive.

Josh wondered for the hundredth time what he was doing. He wasn’t cut out for detective work. He didn’t possess the necessary skills or subtlety for such a job. But Ed’s calm presence was reassuring.

‘Maybe you’re better at it than you think,’ Ed had said when he’d first expressed his reservations. ‘You traced your cousin to the Grange, didn’t you? I think you might be a natural.’

How will I make it through the week without Ed? Badly.

The stress of what had happened to Kevin and what he could do about it might otherwise have overwhelmed him. At any other time, it undoubtedly would have. But when he was with Ed, he felt strong enough to take on anything. Like sleazy businessmen and corrupt politicians.

The week had gone by in a hasty blur of work, research and sex. The restaurant had kept him busy most days, but with every quiet break it had offered, Josh had read through the notes and transcripts of Ed’s investigation. He’d wanted to find out everything he could about their common enemy.

It hadn’t been easy reading. Josh had cried more than once as he’d studied the statements of the men who had suffered at Winterstone Grange. There were many similarities between their accounts. The seduction, the drugs, the abuse. One of the boys had not been as lucky as Kevin had been and had tested positive for HIV several months after his assault. At first, their stories had filled him with sadness, but that had soon given way to anger.

Solace had come when with Ed. It was an odd contradiction, that he could find such comfort in sex after everything he’d read, but he did. When Ed had taken hold of him, kissed him, pushed his cock inside him, Josh had forgotten all about Ray Armstrong. Ed Brolin got right to the core of him. He knew how to touch him and how to fuck him. It had been a long time since any man had affected him in such a deeply meaningful way.
