Ed took me to Mom’s and gave me a lecture all the way over, about the committee and my respectability and stuff like that. When we pulled up at Mom’s, I looked over at him and said, “You are so full of it, Edward.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“You’re mad as hell I kissed my old boyfriend.”

“Maybe I am.” He killed the engine but made no move to get out. “Why’d you do it, Pink? He’s married now, you know.”

“Not for long. He’s getting a divorce because Merry’s boinking Ollie Shanks.”

“You planning on marrying him when he’s free?”

Bobby Tom would be a peach of a client for him. So would Merry. But Ed didn’t look the slightest bit interested from a business standpoint and that’s how I knew this bugged him even more than he was letting on.

Geez, since when was I such a femme fatale? Going around wounding men with my seductive wiles. Yeah right. “Ed, I think I have PMS.”

“Thanks for sharing. Answer the question.”

“No, Ed. I don’t ever want to get married again.”

He looked out the windshield at a couple of mockingbirds, splashing in a puddle made by the sprinklers. “Not all men are like George.”

“That’s not why I don’t want to get married.”

“Why then?”

The beer made me say, “Because I don’t think I have it in me to love someone like I’m supposed to.”

“Maybe that’s because you’ve never met the right man.”

“Maybe. I guess I’ll reserve the decision until later.”

Out of the blue, he said, “Sleep with me, Pink.”

“Now? But Mom’s got chicken spaghetti in there, and coconut meringue pie.”

“Okay, we’ll eat spaghetti and pie, then we’re going back to my house and get naked.”

“What about that waiting thing?”

Grabbing my arm, he tugged me closer to him, until we were nose to nose. “Pink, I wanted to kill the son of a bitch, and that scared the shit out of me. I don’t do this. I don’t care this much. Do you understand?”

“Sure, Ed. You think if we sleep together, we’ll be more committed, and I won’t go kissing other men in alleys.”

“Are you making light of this?”

“No way. I’ve wanted to do it since five minutes after I met you, and it’s got nothing to do with being love-starved and lonely, or that you’re maybe the very best-looking man I know, or that you kiss better than any male on the planet.”

“Then what does it have to do with?” he whispered, his gaze traveling across my face.

“I like you, Ed.”

“I like you, too.”

“But I’m having second thoughts about you because of that lawsuit.”

“Do you still think Ollie Shanks is an innocent man, about to be crucified by me and all those greedy landowners?”

“I think he’s a bounder, fooling around with another man’s wife like that, but that doesn’t make him fair game for a lawsuit over something that’s not his fault.”

“Suppose I told you it is his fault, that hiring Sam to prove Bert is switching the pipe is a smoke screen to cover up something even worse?”

“Hmm, I don’t think so.
