Chapter 14

“What is the reason for the loan?” asked Sam Willis, Karen’s personal banker.

“Well, it’s personal. It’s called a personal loan. Can’t you just write that it is personal?” Karen asked getting flustered. She had pawned off or sold everything she had of any value as soon as the pawn shops opened this morning. She had already struck up a deal with a shady car dealer who said that he would pay her in cash for her car at 6:00 pm tonight as long as she was able to bring him the title. She had already talked to the mortgage company and started the refinancing process as well as took out a hefty loan against her mortgage, and now she was squabbling with the bank trying to get a personal loan for as much as possible. She didn’t pause to think about the wisdom in what she was doing. She thought only of saving her daughter from a life of slavery and pain; nothing else mattered. She would pick up the financial ruins of her life once she knew that Tula was safe.

“Our lenders like to know what they are investing in; it’s just business,” Sam said.

“All right, I am planning on investing in some real estate that is about to go on the market. The owners said that if I could get the financing in order by the end of the day then they would cut me a deal.” Karen lifted her purse onto her lap to silence a call that was coming through. She glanced at the phone screen as she dropped the call and didn’t recognize the number. She put the phone back into her purse and went on, “This investment would be life-changing for me,” she said.

“Well, it sounds like you need a mortgage, not a personal loan,” said Sam helpfully.

Karen shook her head, “No I am not buying the property outright. It’s more of a partnership- they own the building and I am sort of… remodeling it, decorating it for its new purpose,” she said vaguely.

Sam scrunched his eyebrows together trying to understand. “So, you won’t have any legal claim to the property once the remodeling and decorating have been completed? That doesn’t sound right Ms. Harris,” Sam said kindly.

“No, a portion of the property will be mine,” She glanced at her purse as it vibrated indicating that she had a new voice mail. She was quickly becoming overwhelmed at having to explain everything to this banker who couldn’t possibly understand the pressure she was under. “I’m sorry, I really don’t have time to explain all of this to you. I have a contract being prepared to make sure that my investment is above board and legitimate. I don’t care what you write down for the reason of the loan. I just need to make sure I have the money in my hands by the end of the business day today. I don’t mean to be rude, but I have given you all the information that you need.
