CHAPTER 22
PERCY
I sit back on the edge of the table that used to be in the middle of the room. Now itâs pushed toward the back wall, so we both sit at it and see the full view of what weâre fighting against. Or who weâre fighting for, if looking at the shots of the victims.
Riley moves around the table, passing the still dark window, and sits in one of the conference chairs as I stand and walk right back to the board. Then he lets out a humming sound of disapproval as he rocks back and forth, and I turn to eye him.
âWhat?â I raise an eyebrow, hopefully.
âThese are way better than the chairs out at the desks and cubicles. More back support,â he says.
This time I get him right in the eye with my aim.
âYou asked,â Riley mumbles with a shrug.
âLetâs talk out everything weâve got. You give me each of the facts,â I order him with the very last marker left over, with me at the whiteboard at the ready.
âWe have two crime scenes,â he starts.
Instead of writing down what he says I use it to form an analysis, a profile, or some other cerebral thought based on the fact heâs giving directly from what we already have up on the boards.
I draw several straight-ish lines to give us columns for a better sorted mess. If I donât have it, once I start going, different information will end up anywhere, making it way harder to sift through when we actually need to.
Nyx / The group / The first killer / The second killer
Then in the under group I start writing my response to Rileyâs first fact.
Two of the top leaders each murdered and displayed the two victims in locations hours from each other as an initiation into whatever plan they have.
I write it a lot slower than I can type it, and I read it out loud as I write in case Riley canât make out my iffy handwriting from where heâs sitting behind the desk. Itâs no contest on who will write, though. Because mine may be iffy, but Rileyâs handwriting is shit.
Itâs the best way I can think to combine our talents at the moment.
âA better, profile-centered view to see it all together.â Thereâs warmth in his voice as Riley adds a nod with his agreement.
I bob my head up and down, glad he understands without my having to fumble through an explanation that I donât even have fully formed. I just went with my gut.
It starts out a quick tango of call and answer.
âToxicology is back,â Riley says with a point of his chin. I donât go over to read the report, knowing he already has. A week in our rearview and not enough to show for it, it feels more important to work as partners, wasting zero time or effort that can be spent elsewhere. âone was loaded with drugs â sedatives, downers, benzos, you name it.â
Drugged first victim, making it easier to carve him up and probably psychologically torture him while still alive.
