Chapter 19
It was the perfect evening for a walk on the beach. A three-quarter moon lit the sand. It glowed like snow, the tide rolled in with its usual mellow, rhythmic tune and a gentle breeze brought with it the salty scent of the ocean. Bear bounded ahead, disappointed in the lack of gulls to chase but just as pleased to chase the white froth as it lapped at the shore and then teasingly rolled back.
I'd finished telling Briggs about my stunning visit with Mayor Price. I wrapped my arm around his. "Well, was that a shock or what?" I asked. He'd been incredibly quiet throughout my entire narrative.
"Oh, I'm sorry did you say something?" he asked. "I couldn't hear or process anything after you told me you went by yourself to Mayfield to show up at the door of a man who had every reason to dislike you and consider you his worst enemy."
I waved off his concern. "Yes, yes, worst enemy, alone to Mayfield, but did you hear me? It turns out Harlan Price is a congenial guy, who, all along, was looking for a way out of politics. Surely, that makes up for my lack ofâ"
"Responsibility?" he added quickly. "Or is reason a better word? Lacey, you should have told me what you were up to."
"You were busy and I figured that if I told youâ"
"I would have said no. It was careless and foolhardy."
I dropped my arm. "Careless is bad enough but calling me foolhardy really crosses the line. Who do you think you are, my Great-aunt Harriet?"
I'd finally cracked through the serious shell. He chuckled. "I kind of like that word and it fits the situation. And you don't have a Great-aunt Harriet."
I wrapped my arm around his again. "No, but if I did, she would definitely say words like foolhardy, dagnabit and heavens to Betsy."
"Heavens to Betsy," Briggs mused. "I'm going to keep that one tucked away for future use." Bear came loping back to us, looking decidedly more wet than dry. "Good thing I remembered to bring a towel in the car." After checking and confirming that we were still there and watching his every gallop, hop and jump, Bear spun around twice and took off at full galumph toward the water.
With a quick tug of his arm, Briggs pulled me closer. "I forgot to tell you about a small, and I mean very small, break in the case."
"Really? How could you keep that from me?" I asked.
"Uh, because the first thirty minutes of our conversation has been about the wonderful and charming Harlan Price."
I nodded. "You're right. I'll let it slip this time. What did you find out? Other than Nellie being utterly innocent."
He peered over at me. "I haven't found that out yet, but I'm thinking less and less of her as a suspect. Particularly with this new piece of information. And, frankly, I'm more than disappointed with myself for missing this witness."
I sucked in a breath. "There's a witness? Oh my gosh, James, why didn't you tell me?"
He cleared his throat.
