Neither of us ever mentioned my promise again. We both knew it had no meaning. I could not leave. If he could not see the shadows which held me prisoner there, he must have come to sense their presence.

The months passed, the routine unchanged, except that his trips out of doors became ever shorter and rarer. Autumn and winter came again, though we were by then barely aware of the passage of time. The anniversary of my return to the house came and went, unnoticed and unmarked.

One night in early spring I was sitting with him until after midnight as usual. The fire was nearly dead. My eyes were closing, the words of the book I was reading no more than a blur. His glass slipped from his hand. He slumped forward as if struck from behind. Suddenly I was wide awake. I rushed over to him, eased his head back and felt his pulse. His mouth gaped and his lower lip sagged. His eyes rolled, unfocussed.

‘It’s all right, Michael, I’ll get help.’

I ran out into the hall and picked up the telephone. Then I rushed up to Megan’s room and knocked on the door.

‘Megan, are you awake?’

There was a murmur from within.

‘It’s Mr Wallace. I’ve sent for an ambulance. I think he’s had a stroke.’
