Eve tried to suppress a shudder as she shook herself out of the memories. Her head pounded, not only from the work before her, but from whatever magic James had worked on her to burn the alcohol from her blood. Her veins still buzzed unpleasantly from the magic.
She opened her eyes and tried not to take in the surrounding carnage. The Remover had struck quickly, and thoroughly. There were six bodies around her in various states of dismemberment, one was the goblin originally marked as the Removerâs victim, the other five were just collateral damage. They were all members of one of the Goblin Councilâs subcommittees. The trolls had their king, the Fae had their Court, and the goblins had their Council.
Caliban grunted beside her, his notebook at the ready. Eve sighed and shook her head. âJust another casualty, his memories added nothing we didnât already know.â
Caliban jotted something down and stood. His boots made a squelching sound on the carpet as he walked away. Eve shuddered. Sheâd been ignoring the way her jeans were sticking to her from where sheâd knelt down, but the sound of Caliban walking away reminded her it wasnât water soaking her pant legs. She tried to look on the bright side as she stood and tried to ignore her nausea at the blood-soaked carpet of the conference room; at least sheâd changed out of her dress before showing up for work.
âOf course it had to be Dimitri that died.â Eve couldnât help but overhear. âNow goddamn Hector with be Manager of the south side. Isnât there anyway we can call for a special election?â
Eve looked over her shoulder. It was late, or early, depending on how you wanted to look at it. A custodian had discovered the slaughter, but now it seemed senior members of the Goblin Council were arriving to survey the damage.
Two goblin men stood just outside the doorway leading into the conference room. Josiah stood just behind them averting his gaze from the room. One of the goblins looked hastily dressed, his hair sticking up wildly on one side of his head. The other looked like he hadnât been to sleep at all. His suit was immaculate and not a hair out of place, he merely looked like they had interrupted his work day.
The disheveled goblin shook his head. âNo, no. The constituents wouldnât abide by another special election. Donât you remember? Thatâs how Dimitri got the position in the first place.â
âGentlemen, please. If we could move to a more suitable spot. Thereâs still work to be done here,â Josiah said.
Eve glanced around the room and regretted it. She didnât understand how the two goblins had seen the carnage and immediately turned their thoughts to elections and how the death of Dimitri, whichever of the bodies belonged to him, seemed only an inconvenience to them.
âClean-up crew is here, Evey.â Eve glanced back at Will. A smudge of blood marred his cheek, with even more on the front of his armor and hands, remnants of scenting the room as she retrieved the memories.
