Lacey’s face flushed red under the weight of Bryan’s gaze; the last time he had looked at her like that was when he had stormed into her apartment and declared his love for her. It was an intense, blazing stare that she would never forget. “Ar—aren’t you?” she stammered, her heart slamming against the wall of her chest. She held her breath, waiting for his response; had she really endured all of those sleepless nights alone in her bed, picturing Karina and Bryan entwined around each other in the darkness, for nothing?

Bryan laughed, but Lacey caught no hint of happiness in the sound. “We haven’t been together for months,” he said, and she noticed that he was clenching and unclenching his fists in his lap. “I just assumed you knew.”

“I’m just surprised, that’s all,” Lacey said, struggling to pull herself together. “The last I heard from Karina the two of you were moving in together, so I assumed things were really serious.”

Bryan shrugged. “They were, I guess, for a while.”

He pursed his lips, and Lacey sensed that he was hesitant to discuss the breakup. She didn’t care, though; she wouldn’t rest until she heard every last detail. A satisfying image of Karina’s tear-stricken face passed through Lacey’s mind and the corners of her mouth began to turn up in a vengeful smile, until she stopped, sickened with herself. She wasn’t usually the type to draw pleasure out of someone else’s pain. Even if that someone had stolen everything from her. “What happened?” she asked breathlessly.

She tried to keep the eagerness from her voice, but Bryan must have picked up on it, because he turned to her with a questioning expression on his face. “Why are you so interested?” He raked his fingernails across the surface of his pants, picking up a piece of invisible fuzz and flicking it onto the floor of the car. Lacey watched his hands moving, resisting the urge to rest her fingers on top of his. She remained quiet, but continued watching him.

“If you must know,” he said quietly, continuing to look anywhere but at Lacey, “it’s because of you.”
