No sooner had we returned to my grandparents’ ranch than my phone lit up with several texts and voicemails from Ursula. Rather than sort through them, I called her directly to see what the fuss was about. She answered on the first ring, inhaling with either shock or relief on hearing my voice.

“Oh, thank goodness—you had me worried there for a minute. Something has been probing the wards we set up. I couldn’t reach you, so I thought the worst.”

“I am fine, herb mother,” I said as I turned the sword this way and that to examine it. “We all are, in fact, having just completed a significant step toward our goal of protecting the county from Fuamnach’s influence.”

“That’s why I was so worried, boy. Whoever is poking at our wards along the county line knows what they’re doing. They’re picking and scratching at the weaves, tryin’ to see how we put it all together. Ain’t no run of the mill wizard or witch doing it, that’s for sure.”

“Did you complete the wards in my absence?” I asked, still examining Caladbolg.

“I did, although I might not have done the best job at activating them. You’re the one that placed the sigils. Seeing as how they’re attuned to you, it’d be a darned good idea for you to go and reinforce what I’ve done. Besides, I don’t do as well with metal. Wood and earth, sure, and plants all day long. Air and metal, not so much.”

“Be that as it may, I still thank you for finishing the work we set out to do. Considering how I was drawn away on urgent business—”

“Rumor has it you’ve been banished by Maeve. That true?”

“Who told you such a thing?”

She scoffed softly. “The Circle has eyes and ears, you know. Maybe not as many as before, but their network still exists, and they like keeping close tabs on you. When you and the girl got scarce all at once, inquiries were made. Apparently, a little birdie in Maeve’s court sold our spies a tip.”

“Hmm. I shall have to inform Maeve of this.”

“Is it true?”

“It is merely a temporary command. The queen wished to get me out of the way while she dealt with emissaries from The Vampyri Council.”

Ursula hissed. “Looking into Amelia’s death, no doubt.”

“We left nothing but ash, but certainly her maker sensed her passing. It likely did not take long for that one to connect the dots.”

“Do you know who her maker is?”

She wouldn’t say it out loud, but I knew what she was thinking. I had been an assassin for the fae, after all. If I could eliminate that one, many of our other problems would go away.

Vampire politics were cutthroat, and they rarely worked toward the same end in their private machinations. If I killed it, some other powerful vampire would take Amelia’s maker’s place on the Council, happy to see their predecessor gone. I doubted there would even be an inquiry.

Of course, killing an elder vampire was another matter entirely.
