A LOVE LETTER

“I’m sure she’ll want to meet up with you though,” continued Vanessa. “We could all go out one evening together again, couldn’t we? Kate loves dancing.”

“I haven’t got time for that,” responded Sharon. “I’ve got no free time at all, what with helping out with the grandkids and my cousins coming over from America. No, this is the only spare time I’ve got.”

“Well I’m glad I was able to make it then,” said Vanessa soothingly. She was always one to keep the peace.

“Don’t you try and make me feel better,” snorted Sharon as she flung down her napkin. “I know what you’re up to.” She looked at Vanessa’s mortified face and began to laugh.

“It’s so easy to wind you up. This meal is amazing. My stomach is about to burst. I don’t think I could eat another thing. I wonder what’s for dessert. Give me that menu.” She snatched at a menu in the middle of the table.

Anna looked at Vanessa and smiled. Vanessa was a paradox. She was tall and slim with a soft, pretty face and always kind. She kept her hair cropped short, a reddish colour and in a very funky style. She always wore black leggings and big, blowsy tops. She liked tattoos and had a few large ones strategically placed upon her body. She also had a piercing in the side of her nose. Looking at her you didn’t know what to expect. She was a magnet for men – but usually the wrong kind. Men chatted to her, took in the tattoos and the stud and automatically assumed she was a completely different person to the one she really was. Somehow Vanessa attracted men who immediately wanted to bed her and expected her to say yes. Vanessa couldn’t understand it. She had survived two marriages, both of which were short lived, and was now looking for Mr. Right. It was going to be an all consuming task though because, as Anna pointed out, good men stayed with their wives. But Vanessa knew he was out there. She knew that there had to be someone out there waiting for her. And she wasn’t going to give up. She was not going to go down the Botox and filler route either. Her tattoos were good enough. And in fact they were. Anna didn’t like tattoos but even she had to admit that Vanessa’s tattoos of elfin folk and faeries were easy on the eye, if a little personally deceptive.

“I’ve just found that letter from my ex this morning,” said Vanessa, changing the subject. Was anyone listening? Sharon had her glasses perched on the end of her nose with her head buried deep in the menu. Tricia was extolling the merits of her virtual boyfriend, the pink and white ridged rabbit, to Lucia, and Jodie and Anita were comparing smooth, wrinkle free foreheads and the wonder of filler.

“That love letter from my first husband,” continued Vanessa loudly. Suddenly all conversation stopped. Now here was something new!

“The one where he says he’s loved me for over twenty years and can we give it another go.
