Chapter Twelve

Morgan

He kept glancing over at me as I fidgeted in my seat. I tried not to make eye contact with him. “I’m fine, I’ll be all right.” I couldn’t bring myself to smile.

He covered my hand with his. “I know you aren’t all right. You don’t have to hide anything from me. You don’t have to pretend with me anymore. I accept everything about you. Everything.” He brought my hand to his lips and softly kissed it.

I completely changed the subject. “What did your mom say about me coming? I mean she’s never even met me before and now I’ll be staying with her. She has to think this is crazy.”

He smiled. “My mother isn’t like that. She’s very open-minded, kind of fly by the seat of her pants. She is actually excited about meeting you.”

“What exactly did you tell her?” I was surprised and anxious all at once.

“Well I called her as I was putting your suitcase in the trunk and told her I needed a big favor. So she said, ‘Sure, anything.’ I said I’d met the love of my life and needed somewhere for you to stay safe. She said, ‘Look no further’ and asked when she should expect us.”

I narrowed my eyes, looking at him, searching for words to say. “Your mom sounds great.”

“She is, you’ll see.” His smile was wide until he looked over at my sad expression again.

“How far away is her house?” I spoke, still looking everywhere except at him.

“Just over two hours. It’s just past four now, so we should make it there before seven tonight. Why don’t you nap while I drive?”

“I’ll try my best.” I sighed and climbed into the back seat. I pulled my feet up and turned on my side, closing my eyes. The last thing I remembered was trying to move my untamed hair out of my face.

Thoughts of my childhood on the beach with Mom replayed over and over again. They were happy thoughts. Thoughts of swimming in warm sea waters for hours on end just kept coming. Thoughts of reading on the beach as the sun glazed my skin made me smile inside, until my happy thoughts turned sour when Leland crept into them. Thoughts of him dragging me back to that house by my hair left me paralyzed, me yelping as he held me down and forced himself on me. “Please stop! No!”“Morgan. Morgan wake up, you’re dreaming. Morgan!”

I jumped and instinctively drew my claws, digging them into what I thought was Leland’s flesh.

“Argh! Morgan it’s just me. It’s just me, Wyatt.” His yell was restrained and he was calm as he tried bringing me back to reality.

My eyes were open now. I was awake in the back seat of the truck. He held me in his arms as I was still embedded in the flesh of his upper arms.

“Oh no! Wyatt I’m so sorry.” I was mortified. I quickly pulled my hands away from him and let my claws recede.

He still managed to smile with bloody punctures in his arms.
