Fucking for a Better Grade

What started last week can never be discovered.

I would do anything for my daughter, but what I did could ruin us both.

It all started on a typical morning. As usual, we were running late. My morning was a disaster and it hadn’t even started. I had a consultation with Newton & Co. — a giant firm that wanted to fully redecorate their office. It would be a great gig if they liked my estimate, which I promised to give them when I met them at 10:00. But first, I had to get Cassie to school and conference with her English teacher.

“Hurry up, Cassie!” I screamed across our apartment. “We’re already 10 minutes late!”

Cassie came sauntering down the hall, obvious annoyance creasing her face. “God, Mom, chill out. It’s just school.”

I rolled my eyes, sighing as I looked her over, preparing for yet another fight. “Are you really going to wear that?”

Cassie was dressed in baggy black pants and a too-tight top with a garish-looking clown on the front. Her hair was pulled back in a loose but messy ponytail, and her eyes looked like she was ready to leap onstage with KISS.

“Yes,” she snapped, “I am. Breaking news: You can’t control everything.”

My daughter loved to remind me of my incessant need for control, even though I worked on it daily, probably more than anything else, and was reminded of my failings by nearly every other thought in my head.

Raising a teenager was hard; being a single mother to a sassy-mouthed girl who acted exactly like me was karmic tragedy.

I pulled on my shoes, sighing again, then grabbed her lunch and looked her over once more.

“You’d look beautiful even if you were painted like that ugly clown.” I smiled. “I just wish you would believe it enough to stop hiding your truth.”

I turned the knob and ushered her through the door, then we bounded down the steps, hopped into our blue Saturn, and started the silent drive to school.

This morning I couldn’t stand the quiet. We had to have a talk.

“Your English teacher called for a conference,” I said, then gave the sentence several seconds to breathe before adding: “He says you’re failing.”

“I’m not failing English,” Cassie pouted. “Mr. Gregory’s a jerk, and hates my writing. That’s a fact.”

“He said you’re not doing your homework,” I went on, stealing a glance at her sullen face. I would have given anything to go back to the days when we danced on the way to the car, then sang as we drove to school. “Cass, if you don’t raise your grades, getting into Beaumont U will be impossible.”

Cassie had wanted to get into Beaumont since we visited one of my cousins there five years before. She’d been in 6th grade, which apparently wasn’t too early for her to know what college she wanted. She started begging and pleading with me to pretty please with sugar on top let her attend college 1,500 miles away.
