ELLIE WAS BEGINNING TO REALIZE she had no talent for acting. Zero, zip, nada. In the three days that had passed since Christian had first crawled through her window, she was finding it harder and harder to remember that they were only supposed to be pretending to be a couple for Destiny’s benefit.

Having sex on her kitchen counter wasn’t helping matters.It was confusing as hell. Because on the one hand, she found Christian crazy sexy, and she could not ignore the way he’d pushed her every button. Or the way they felt so right kissing. Or how they talked about nearly anything, and it was so easy they so often descended into joking and laughing.

On the other hand, there was the sick, angry feeling she got every time she thought about Christian’s mission. It wasn’t that she disagreed with his purpose—if the Western Alliance was trying to blow up California, they obviously needed to be stopped. But she thought it had more to do with her generally uncomfortable feelings regarding her father. He was her father, and he had morphed into a wacko. She didn’t know what to do with that.

Nor did she know what to do with her very real—and, she feared, very obvious—attraction to Christian. Better to focus on the mission because she was less conflicted about it.

Their earlier trip to Bristol had finally paid off. An old high-school friend had called Ellie to give her information he’d gotten from his uncle. It was a list of people in Vegas who might have been in contact with Harlan recently. She and Christian already had run into a couple of dead-ends as they chased down the names and now their search had landed them at the Lucky Strike.

As they walked through the casino looking for her father’s old pal and chronic gambling partner, Wes Chambers, Ellie couldn’t help feeling a kind of silly buzz at the fact that she and Christian looked like a real couple—even with constant reminders that she needed to focus on other matters. Women often turned to eye him as he passed, and then they’d let their gazes—sometimes hostile and sometimes not—skid over Ellie.

She couldn’t blame them for looking.

“You sure this guy hangs out here?” Christian asked as they scanned the blackjack tables.

“Of course I’m not sure. For all I know he’s dead, or a resident of Idaho, or both.”

A waitress passing by stopped. “Can I get you two something?”

“Actually,” Ellie said, “I’m looking for an old friend. He used to hang out here all the time. His name is Wes Chambers.”

The waitress frowned. “Can’t say I know him, but I’ve only been working here a few months. Why don’t you ask Lena over there.” She pointed to a tall blonde who was probably in her forties with a body that would make any twenty-year-old proud. “She’s been working here forever, so she’d know him.”

They crossed the floor to the woman named Lena, who was clearing glasses off an empty blackjack table. “Excuse me,” Christian said.
