Chapter 13
Randy used a chair to break the window.
He wasn’t an expert, but he could recognize the sound of gunfire. When it happened he’d been reading a murder mystery set in Minnesota, which wasn’t a very cheerful pastime with dead bodies turning up everywhere, but at least it was entertaining and he’d devoured the other books so it was about all he had left.
Two loud pops. He froze in the act of turning a page. No return fire.
He just knew. Get out .
The gatekeepers usually sat on the front porch and drank coffee in the evening, talking to each other. Sometimes they played cards; they were two older officers and they argued amicably. He was aware they’d come to the conclusion he wasn’t really a flight risk, so they mostly left him alone, which was well … lonely, but better than jail.
As he brushed aside the broken glass, cutting the hell out of his hand, he wondered if jail wasn’t a lot safer even if he lived with the dregs of society sleeping on the next bunk.
The drop landed him in a rosebush and he’d heard the sound of tearing fabric as he’d struggled to get out. Scratched and bleeding he staggered up and tried to decide which way to run. He literally had no idea where he was exactly because it wasn’t like anyone had handed over the address.
But he ran. There was a wooded area behind the house, not big by any means, but at least cover. He would have run through it to one of the houses in the next subdivision, but he was bleeding, and what if he was already being followed and the people had kids. He couldn’t live with putting anyone else in danger, especially children.
If he managed to live at all, which might be a legitimate question. Safe house was … not so safe.
He hid behind a thicket of young trees, unarmed and helpless. They would know which way he’d gone, he couldn’t stay there. He heard the back door open and took off.

Ellie’s phone rang, and at least she’d finished eating and was cleaning up when she saw the number with a small frisson of foreboding. She handed over the sponge. “The ID says Locke. This can’t be good news.”
Jason said grimly, “Why is it I think I’d rather wash dishes than take that call.”
“No one wants to wash dishes.” She slid her finger across screen to accept and put the phone to her ear. “This is MacIntosh.”
“Hello, Detective, this isn’t a call I wanted to make, but Chief Metzger told me to go ahead and handle it because of the intricate nature of the case. We have a double homicide that happened this evening, and unfortunately, now Randy Lane is missing. Two U.S. mar shals are dead. Single shot for each of them at close range.”
Ellie was literally speechless. She sat down. “What? No. How could he even have gotten a weapon? It wasn’t Randy.”
“Neither of the federal officers were missing their weapon, and the forensic team said the guns were fully loaded.
