chapter

twenty-two

David returned to classes on Monday. Immediately after lunch he went to see L. Estabrooks. He didn’t want the operations director left with lingering questions about where he’d been last week. Susie greeted him warmly but with some surprise.

“David! We didn’t expect to see you this soon.”

“Hello, Susie. Is it a bad time?”

“No! No, of course not. I’m always glad to see you.”

“Nice to see you, too, Susie, but I also need to see the boss. Is he available?”

“He’ll only be a minute. But are you all right? We heard you were in hospital with food poisoning.”

“That’s what they tell me but I’m fine now.”

“Thank God.” She laughed self-consciously. “I was afraid it might have something to do with me.”

She’s fishing, David thought. Better be careful how I respond to that. Best thing to do is treat it straight and not try to be cute.

“No,” he smiled. “I didn’t get sick until Monday night.”

“Good.” She tried again. “Last Saturday night was fun, though, wasn’t it?”

“Yes it was. It was a really nice evening.” He stayed away from making it personal. “Will the boss be long, Susie?”

“I don’t think so. Are you working with us this week?”

“Of course. Nothing wrong with me now. Do you have any jobs or is that a stupid question?”

“Stupid question, David.” She laughed and handed him a sheet of paper. “There’s a list as long as your arm. You want to start this evening?”

“Yes, I’ll try to catch up over the next few nights.”

The door to the inner office opened and Susie motioned for him to go on in. Estabrooks greeted him effusively.

“David my boy! Good to see you. Food poisoning, was it? Nasty stuff. Sit down, sit down.”

“Yes it is,” David agreed, taking the chair in front of the desk, “but I’m fine now and anxious to get back to work. Just wanted to say I’m sorry about missing last week and I’ll do what I can to clear up the backlog.”

“I’m sure you will. Your daughter is okay?”

“Yes she is, thanks.”

“And that little Hussan girl?”

“She’s coming out of hospital next week. They’re expecting she’ll be back to school after Christmas.”

“Great, that’s great.” Estabrooks paused. “You’re doing a great job here, David, and the students like you. Drop in any time you want to talk.”

“Will do.” David closed the door behind him.

“Susie,” he said, as she looked up from her desk, “would you like to go out Friday night? Nothing special, just supper and perhaps a movie.”

Susie was delighted. She hadn’t really expected him to ask her out, although she wasn’t sure why. She knew she was an attractive woman and she also knew David liked her, even if it was just as a friend. But she was still pleasantly surprised.

“I’d love to,” she said, “I really would.”

“Good. I’ll pick you up at six. Bye.”

David called home from the pay phone in the hallway outside. Sam was at the hospital visiting Raven, of course, and Robyn said she was making supper.

“I’m not much of a cook,” she admitted, “but it should be better than nothing.
