TUESDAY

23

Michael’s dive equipment arrived at 8 a.m. and he and Beau left immediately for the river; Jim was going to the morgue to glad-hand the coroner and access any evidence that he could—then would meet them at Lantern Gate, as close as he could get without getting the RV stuck in the muck.

Kara was relieved when they finally left—she had arranged to talk to Winnie this morning, and she didn’t think Beau would be happy that she’d roped in his grandmother to get her here.

Last night when Kara helped Toni with the sandwiches, she’d asked if Toni would mind calling Winnie over to clean the house for an hour or two. Kara would pay her for her time—the kid needed the money, and Kara didn’t want her coming all the way out here and leave empty-handed. Winnie had jumped at the opportunity and told Toni she’d be there at nine.

After their meeting the night before, Kara had pulled Matt aside privately as he was about to leave with Savannah to go back to Lafayette.

“I’m talking to Winnie tomorrow,” she said.

They were standing outside the small house, alone. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to tell her team, but she wasn’t sold on the new agent. Trust came slow to her. It took months before she trusted Matt’s team. And she still didn’t fully trust Catherine or Zack, but for different reasons.

“What if she won’t talk?”

“I have the Ethan Davis card. I think she was his girlfriend—and I know that she was friends with Ethan and Ricky Dubois. It’s an angle, and right now one of the few that we have. Nicki was her sister. It might be a slow process to turn her, but I think she’ll help.”

“Tread carefully.”

“I understand kids like Winnie. She’s smart with a healthy dose of fear, and she’s looking for an escape. I can get through to her.”

She frowned as bugs flew around them. They were glowing. “What the hell are those?”

Matt grinned. “Fireflies.”

“Those are real?”

“Yes.”

“Do they bite? Like mosquitos?”

“No.”

“I don’t think bug butts should double as light bulbs.”

“Kara,” he said, his voice growing serious, and Kara knew she didn’t want to continue this conversation.

“I said I’d be careful.”

She knew that wasn’t what he was going to say.

“We haven’t talked in over a week. Did I do something to make you mad?”

By “talked” he meant “had sex.” Clearly they talked—they worked together.

“Do I look mad?”

“You don’t do mad like other people. I just want to make sure we’re okay.”

“We’re fine.”

“You don’t sound like you believe that.”

“Matt—drop it. Now’s not the time or place. We agreed to be strictly professional when we were working. We’ll talk when this is all over, okay?”

He stared at her, an odd look on his face. Did he look hurt? She couldn’t stroke his ego now.

She walked back into the house and left him standing in the driveway, surrounded by fireflies.
