VANCE

It’s well after midnight when I leave the library. We would all have been more comfortable in our beds, but none of us wants to leave Amelie. She’s snuggled between Reed and Jackson on the floor, a faint smile on her lips. Memphis and Greyson are camped out nearby, each with an arm thrown over his head, identical even in sleep. Tanner is in one of the chairs, slouched down, his head tilted to the side, snoring lightly. Jesse is stretched out on the couch, flat on his back, his hands folded across his stomach.

The room smells of sex and sweat. Not entirely surprising given that there was a lot of sex and a lot of sweat happening just a couple hours ago, but I need some air.

I tiptoe out of the library, leaving the door ajar, and head for the front porch. I don’t bother with clothing since no one else is around. The night air cools my bare skin. I breathe deeply and settle into one of the rocking chairs that have graced the front porch as long as I can remember. There is only a sliver of moon, but as my eyes grow accustomed to the darkness, I can make out the familiar shapes of trees and outbuildings. It’s quiet except for the night insects, the creak of my old rocker, and the hoot of an owl in the distance.

“May I join you?”

She’s wrapped in the throw from the couch, her hair disheveled and her lips swollen from the kisses of seven men.

I smile, welcoming her on my lap.

She lays her head against my chest, and for a moment I just savor holding her. I play with her hair, silky curls sliding between my fingers. I stroke the curve of her cheek, her skin fine-textured and soft. I trace the curve of her lips, feeling her warm, even breath on my fingers.

This woman has crawled into my lap, just like she’s crawled into my cold heart and made a place for herself. I can’t help but wonder why she chose me to be her first. But I’m glad.

She kisses me. It’s soft, gentle, intimate. Something stirs in me. I deepen the kiss, but still take it slow. I can barely see more than her outline, but I can smell and taste her, and I want her again.

“Can I ask you something?” she asks, pulling away to cuddle into my chest.

“Sure.”

“Your parents,” she says.

Pain spears through my heart, still raw after all these years.

“What happened? I mean I know it was a car accident, but you carry a lot of guilt. I can see it every time you talk about them.”

This is the very last thing I want to talk about. Ever. But somehow it feels right to share this with her. And so I tell her the thing I’ve been carrying around for years, the thing I’ve never told another human being. Not even my brothers.

“It’s my fault they’re dead,” I say. “Dad had asked me to come home.
