Chapter Six
Anxiety crept around Tom’s gut like some sort of parasite he couldn’t shed. Ever since he’d spoken to Eric earlier, he’d felt that something was wrong. At first Tom had thought he might be processing the disappointment of their broken dinner date too seriously—over-thinking it and feeling scared that it was some indicator that Eric wasn’t all that interested. But he thought over the chief’s words, his manner and tone, and he really believed him. Something about Eric made Tom want to trust him in all ways—with his life, his feelings, his heart—his soul. It was almost too overwhelming, but Tom wasn’t about to turn his back on the man who could end up being the love of his life.
But now his anxiety had morphed into concern that the problems with Charlene were just a small sneak peek that things relating to the arson fires were about to get frighteningly out of control. His heart clutched at the idea that Eric would be hurt personally by any of the odd things that had been happening in Mesa. He was desperate to have him by his side, in his arms, so that he could know for sure everything was okay.
His phone rang and he grabbed it, hoping it was Eric.
Yes!
“Hi, Eric, are you all right?” The words tumbled out of Tom’s mouth before he had the chance to stop them.
“Whoa, what’s this all about?” asked Eric. “I was just calling to let you know the meeting is over, and that I’m on my way.” His tone softened. “I really need to see you.”
Tom drew in a sharp breath. “Something happened, didn’t it?”
“Hmmm. Well, yes. You must be psychic.” Eric laughed without any humour. “I’ll explain when I get there. I just really need you right now.”
“Okay, I’ll see you in a bit.”
Tom clicked the phone off, and pondered Eric’s words, his gut churning. He hoped it wasn’t too bad. Somewhere inside him, though, he could also feel a spark of joy that Eric was choosing to come to him.
He needs me. Wow.
His bleak motel room was already tidied from Tom’s earlier expectation of Eric’s arrival, so there wasn’t anything to do but wait. How was he going to be able to stand it at the firehouse when he went back on shift tomorrow? If Eric came by to check on them, or anything, everyone would instantly know. Tom felt as though he wouldn’t be able to hide it from anyone—his feelings were just too strong for this wonderful man.
Finally, there was a light knock at the door. As soon as Tom opened it and saw Eric standing in the waning twilight, he knew it was bad. Very bad.
“Oh, babe, come in.”
Once the door was closed, Eric gathered Tom in his arms, holding onto him as if he were a life preserver. In the warmth and strength of his arms, Tom felt as though he were the one being protected and comforted, yet he wanted to be there for him, for his man.
