Chapter 16
Their new home was still a mess when the four of them climbed into their car and headed for Johnny's infamous restaurant. Since it was located in the middle of downtown and destined to rain again, they had made sure to give themselves plenty of time to find a good parking spot, but they still ended up having to walk almost a mile to get to the place. Luckily, the heavy clouds above didn't dump their water during the walk and the Dashwoods soon found themselves in front of a towering skyscraper.
"This is where it is?" Marianne asked as if positive nothing good could come out of the building.
Elinor checked the address against the text Johnny had sent. "This is the spot. It's on the top floor."
"A restaurant on the top floor!" Their mother gushed. "I'm going to love working here, then. The views must be spectacular!"
"Yeah, of clouds," Marianne stated, glaring at the dark sky as if blaming it for her sour mood.
"Come on, Marianne," their mother said. "Be a sweetie and lighten up. Things could be a lot worse."
"Yeah, like finding out Brandon works here."
Elinor hid a smile and couldn't help wondering if that would be Marianne's fate. Instead, something far more pleasant was found in the restaurant.
"A grand piano!" Marianne squealed and rushed to the gleaming instrument placed on a raised platform in the middle of the restaurant with enough space for a few singers to station themselves around it. Tables surrounded the platform as though performances happened often. Booths lined the walls for those who perhaps weren't as interested in the music.
Marianne lovingly trailed her fingers over the black and white keys but didn't plunk a note since a few customers loitered in the booths.
"Maybe Johnny would be willing to let you practice on it after hours?" Their mother said.
"Not if it requires dating someone," Marianne muttered and Elinor had to fight not to laugh.
"What is this?" Johnny's voice invaded the scene, causing Marianne to jump. "This beautiful lady also plays the piano?"
She backed away from the piano as if it now carried a contagious disease.
"Marianne," their mother began with a warm smile to Johnny, "has always loved playing the piano. It's been her dream to be a world-famous pianist one day."
Johnny's eyes lit up as if he'd found a new specimen to experiment on. "Is that so?"
Marianne scooted next to Elinor as if seeking protection and Elinor wanted to wrap her arms around her but feared that would only make the situation worse.
"This is excellent news!" Johnny continued. "Customers love piano music in the evening. Makes them give bigger tips." He winked at their mother. "But the best tips..." He grinned at Marianne, "are for the pianist. Come, play for me!"
"Right now?" Marianne eyed the few scattered patrons eating a late lunch or a very early dinner.
"No, this evening, for my guests! And Elinor can sing."
Elinor jerked. "I don't sing."
"Come now, don't be shy—"
"No, Johnny, she really doesn't," their mother said. "She can draw, though.
