Right of Way

Were we expecting these toads on our doorstep?

– the smaller with a jewel stuck

to her forehead, a round white pebble,

a third eye, only blind, without a pupil,

picked up on her pilgrimage beside

the artificial lake or risking the ringroad.

It’s chill and blank, that stone – perhaps a chunk

of granite ballast from the virtual quarry,

the way it seems more of an ailment

than an ornament. Her mate is clad in

eco-warrior fatigues: grey chevrons

screenprinted on a ground of dull jade.
