Charlene says storytime has to last forty-five minutes, which is stupid because it's hard to get more than eight kids to sit still that long. Plus, corporate doesn't always send very long stories. I get angry looking at the moms treating the book like TV, scrolling their phones while the CD talks. If they aren't interested, how do they expect their kids to be? You have to set an example once you have kids. Maybe that's part of why I don't want any.

When there are more than eight kids and the CD runs short, it's my job to run and get paper and crayons for a craft, which feels dumb sometimes, because shouldn't we try talking about the story together instead? Last week was about an alligator who went to space. He had a helmet shaped like a hot dog so his jaws would fit, and his tail was encased in silver. One boy drew the sky, with planets that looked like chocolate candy, and called it STAIRY STAIRY NIGHT. One girl drew her puppy floating above the moon. Neither picture had anything to do with the alligator, but I didn't know how to help.
