Chapter Six

Nova burst through the heavy swing doors into the reception area of the police station. Her feet skidded on the linoleum floor, but she managed to grab onto the waist-high front desk to keep herself from falling again.

“What on earth?” Constable Adam Roberts looked up from the paperwork in front of him, clearly startled. He was a young man, no more than twenty-eight, with a baby face and close-set brown eyes. His dark hair was cut razor short at the sides, and a little thicker on top, and a light groove creased his forehead from where his hat had been resting.

“Where is he, Adam? What have you done with him?” Nova demanded, still breathless from running through the thick snow.

“Excuse me?” PC Roberts asked, pulling himself up to his full height, which was no more than two inches over Nova’s five-six. “You can’t come crashing in here like that, Miss Granger.”

“Miss Granger?” she asked, eyes widening. “Adam, we were at school together, so I think we can cut out the formalities. What have you done with Tris?”

Adam’s mouth became pinched, and his shoulders visibly tightened. “That may be so, Miss Granger, but this is a place of formality. It’s not your café, so I’ll thank you to call me Constable Roberts. Mr Ashcroft is safe and well in one of the cells. Now, please leave. I have work to do.”

Swallowing a scream of frustration, Nova slapped her hand down on the desk when Adam would have turned away. “What is he being charged with?” she demanded.

“That’s no business of yours,” Adam said, narrowing his eyes and leaning forward in a way that Nova suspected was supposed to be intimidating.

She shook her head at the idea and stood her ground. “Tris is entitled to legal representation. I’m not moving until you get him a solicitor.”

A self-satisfied grin tilted Adam’s mouth. “Actually, that’s where you’re wrong. Mr Ashcroft is not under arrest, so he has no entitlement to legal counsel at this time.” He did turn away this time and resumed his seat behind a smaller desk. There was a TV in the corner playing football highlights, and it was obvious where Adam’s priorities lay.

Nova really did want to scream. “If he’s not under arrest, then why do you have him in a cell?”

“This is not your business, Nova. Go home.” He didn’t even look away from the TV.

“I’m not going anywhere, you jumped-up…”

The front doors swung open, cutting off the sentence that would most likely have gotten Nova her own comfortable cell. Poppy and Luna entered. They’d stopped only long enough to pull their coats on over their sleep clothes, and Luna’s hair was still wrapped in a towel.

“What’s going on, Nova?” Poppy asked. Luna hung back by the door, but her eyes showed her interest.

Nova pointed at Adam. “He has Tris in a cell. He says Tris hasn’t been arrested, but he won’t let him go, and refuses to call Tris’ solicitor.” Fear was bubbling up in Nova, and she could feel unshed tears sting her eyes.
