Chapter Twenty-Nine

Ezekiel wasn't sure how long the two of them just glared at each other, but Wrothrex spoke first.

"Where is Grae? Does she know too?" His voice was filled with concern. More concern than he had ever had for Ezekiel in his whole life.

It was difficult not to want to hit the old man from all the anger and jealousy welling up inside of him. His heart was hurting and he could barely see straight. "She doesn't know? You never told her either?"

Fondly, his father smiled. "She was just mastering sign language and I found I simply adored teaching her, if you must know. It brought us closer and I felt she was able to speak to me better if she used her hands instead of her voice."

These were not the words of the cold-hearted man Ezekiel had known all his life. Thoughtfulness? Concern? How could he speak so tenderly about someone not even blood related? And she was black! Was his father blind?

"How could you love her more than me?" Ezekiel raged.

"Easily," his father said with a calm coldness. "I told you already why I hated you so much. Your grandmother made me marry your mother when I told her I loved another and when your mother took her life, I was to blame, when she knew I never loved her from the time I met her."

"Because you were a cold cruel bastard to her."

"Nancy was weak long before she met me. That's why no one married her. No one wanted her and your grandmother only arranged the marriage because she was good friends with Nancy's guardian, who didn't want her to die an old maid."

"Don't you talk about my mother like that! You have no right!" He wanted to choke the older man for deigning to speak his mother's name. "Your harsh attitude and coldness toward her drove her to her depression."

"She was depressed before she met me, boy. Are you even listening to what I'm saying? I may have been a catalyst, but she was like that since she was young. Your grandmother thought she was doing Nancy a favor by forcing my hand - using the family's fortune to dangle over my head in order for me to get my ass down the aisle with your mother. I thought I could forget my past and accept what I felt was my duty to family, but I couldn't and when your mother became pregnant, I knew I was living a lie and walked away from the money and my family. As I told you before, you are nothing but a constant reminder that I could have been the father of another child if I had not denied myself from being happy. You were the mistake, not Grae."

A terrible feeling of hatred overwhelmed him. "If Grae is not my sister, then how do you know her mother so well?"
