There was nothing in the world that could have kept my legs from moving. My thighs were tense and my knees and feet were fighting against my mind, jittering up and down as I sat on the couch, waiting.
Ty said he would pick me up at seven. It was three minutes past. I’d been dressed and ready to go for fifteen minutes. I was wearing my favorite dress—it covered me all the way from my neck to my wrists and all the way down to my ankles. The material was covered in glittery sequins. Two large slits were on either side, revealing my legs all the way up to my thighs.
It was the best and sexiest dress I owned. I knew that Ty was going to take me somewhere fancy so I needed to look the part. I couldn’t have people staring at us, wondering what the hell a stud like him was doing with a mess like me.
All of the people in those places loved to look down their noses at others. It was just how they acted. Money did things to people. Wasn’t that part of my worry, that money had changed Ty?
Besides, why wouldn’t it change someone? All those years of struggling, barely able to make ends meet, eating boxed mac n’ cheese… All that suffering had to be for something.
Ty was bound to splurge all of his money on fancy things. And why shouldn’t he? He worked hard for all that money. It was obvious he was going to spend it to try and impress me, or other women he chose to spend time with.
He was bound to arrive soon. It didn’t matter how many cars I heard go by, or how many pairs of feet I heard thumping in the hallway outside. He’d knock on the door when he was here.
Despite my logic, my heart skipped a beat every time I thought it was him. For the first time in years I’d let a man into my life. I didn’t want to be disappointed.
After waiting for so long for someone to come along and sweep me off my feet, that was exactly what I wanted—a perfect, whirlwind romance that would take my breath away.
Ty was exactly that. Without a doubt, he’d always been able to take my breath away. Not only was he stunning, but he was kind, generous, and full of love and hope. He was everything I wasn’t, and I knew that seeing him again after all these years, it meant something.
Still, there was a pervasive thought eroding away at the back of my mind: What if he stands me up? What if all of this goes wrong, like it has been?
We hadn’t had much luck so far. Our personalities had clashed more than once. How were we supposed to move past all of that and really get to know one another? All we did was piss each other off. It seemed like this was never going to work, not in a million years.
