With a few glasses of whiskey warming my belly and a hot roast dinner in the oven, I was feeling confident when I heard Kyle’s car in the driveway. Over the last few weeks of spending almost every day together, I’d become attuned to the exact sound of his car engine. My wolf’s ears pricked up and I felt its happiness. This was Kyle and Brock’s first time at my house, and I savored the way that the sound of his tires on the gravel in my driveway made me feel giddy.
“Come in, come in.” I smiled at him and Brock from the front door as they hurried through my front garden, both of them bundled up in jackets and scarves. All I could see were Kyle’s eyes crinkling as he beamed at me from between the beanie pulled down low over his eyebrows and a scarf that was bundled up as high as his nose. I stopped him in the doorway to kiss his cold, chilled cheeks, and Brock pushed past us into the heat.
“He’s excited to see you,” Kyle said quietly. “I told him we had some big news to share. He’s going to be so happy.”
“Does he have any idea what we’re going to talk about,” I asked as I started unwrapping scarves from Kyle’s neck, as if I were unwrapping a gift.
“I don’t think so,” he replied, and I was caught off guard by how delectable his lips looked as I revealed them. I felt myself pulled forward, and I pressed a soft warm kiss against his cold lips. He moaned and kissed me back, until we heard Brock clearing his throat.
We chuckled and looked at him as he stood in the hallway with his hands on his hips.
“Are you going to give us a tour, or what?” he asked impatiently.
“I am. Just wait while I get your dad unwrapped.”
“I really want to see your games room!” he exclaimed, shaking out his hands excitedly.
I gave them a quick tour, and sure enough Brock fell in love with my gaming console. Kyle was impressed with my sound system but didn’t say much else, though he did spend a long time looking up at the high ceilings and at the ornate glasswork. Once Brock got set up in the games room playing the latest releases, I went into the kitchen to tend to the roast.
Kyle came up beside me as I was turning a hot pan of nearly-done roast potatoes.
“Mm, that smells incredible,” he said.
“I hope you’ll like it. It’s not chicken soup, but it’s tasty. How’ve you been feeling today?” I asked.
“Great. No longer dizzy, and my appetite is back.”
“Hm, that’s good,” I replied quietly as a wave of sadness washed over me.
“I guess it was just a stomach bug after all,” he said.
I was surprised by how disappointed I felt. It’s not like I’d been counting on Kyle being pregnant, but the possibility of it had made me excited. My wolf had been on high alert
