Two days later, I found myself breaking my second rule; no prying.

It just didn’t make any sense! Skylar had taken to me asking questions with as much enthusiasm as she had had in finding out more about me. The way her eyes gleamed, it was as though she’d been expecting this to happen at some point.

But there was one subject that made her close down entirely. Whenever I asked her about her childhood, she clammed up very quickly and refused to answer anything, making my first rule come back to bite me.

It also hadn’t escaped my notice in Washington that she was hiding something she had been concerned about, something that Mason Howard was apparently aware of. Was this related to that secret? If it wasn’t, just how many secrets did the woman have?

She was my personal assistant, the one I counted on to help me with my schedule, know what was happening each day and take on any tasks that I, personally, could not do. Relying on her to do that required a certain level of trust.

Therefore, I needed to know almost everything about her. How was I expected to trust her if she had such large secrets in her past?

Her resume told me little. She lived here in New York, and her emergency contact was Chloe Henderson, who Skylar had already told me was a reporter in the city. She had worked a variety of different jobs, most of them in different administration and event management positions, though there was no telling how many she had left off the already extensive list. She had studied in New York.

But according to her birth certificate, which she had provided for identity purposes, she was born in Detroit, Michigan. Had she traveled all the way to New York after school so that she could attend college here?

And why did she have no family members listed as her emergency contacts? After Chloe, she had listed someone named Josh Fairweather. When I had asked her about him, she’d simply said that he was a friend that she saw every now and then. As such, the two people she wanted to know first if she was in an accident was her best friend/roommate, and an acquaintance she rarely saw.

It didn’t make sense.

Knowing that she was born in Detroit, however, I didn’t have to look very far. Hesitating for only a moment, I typed in the name ‘Wilson’ into my search engine, and set the parameters to within an eighteen-year span, from the time Skylar was born to approximately the time she would have left, and narrowed the search to news from Detroit. Logically, if Skylar had no contact with her parents, then maybe something had happened to them?

It didn’t take long to find what I was looking for.

The headline blared out at me, and I scanned the article. ‘A freak accident…’, ‘Truck skidded out of control…’, ‘Doctors Martin and Louise Wilson are survived by their ten-year-old daughter, Skylar…’, ‘A tragic day for those that love them…’ So, Skylar was an orphan.
