The tarp covering the car seat crinkled loudly. Robbie in her ever-preparedness had a blue tarp in the trunk of the car. She had put the tarp over the car seat as protection against Kathleen’s muckiness.
They bumped along the dirt road in silence (except for the loud crinkling of the tarp) until Robbie said, “The other birders were very impressed with you and your sighting. I wish we could’ve stayed for lunch but you really need to get cleaned up.”
“After they stopped laughing,” Kathleen said. She’d surprised herself by laughing along. Several of the women showed her photos of their swamp baptism. She had enjoyed the camaraderie. Maybe people weren’t so bad after all. She might go again. After all, she had survived a beaver attack and how many people could boast of that?
“You were a good sport. I was proud of you,” Robbie said, turning onto the paved county road. “And I’m certain the green stuff will come out of your clothing. I have excellent laundry skills.”
“Of course you do.” Kathleen closed her eyes and fell asleep. Robbie gave her a gentle tap on the shoulder when they pulled up in the driveway.
“Time to wake up, sleepy head. Oh, and I should warn you, your mother is sitting on the porch.”
“What!”
“I am assuming she was in the neighborhood and wanted to see how the birding went. I think she will pleased with our find.”
“I’m a mess.”
“She is aware of that.”
“Not mentally. I meant physically.”
“I recommend not getting too close to your mother. You smell,” Robbie said.
“Don’t hold back or anything,” Kathleen groused. She got out of the car and walked to the porch.
“Oh, my. I had no idea birding was such a dirty activity,” her mother said.
“It is if you fall into the wetland after a beaver attack,” Kathleen said.
“A beaver?” Sylvia asked.
“Yes, a beaver. I was physically violated by a beaver.”
“That’s what she said,” Robbie joked.
Her mother pressed her lips together, blinked several times, and then burst out laughing. Robbie chuckled. Kathleen scowled. She didn’t hold up for long. She began to laugh, too. The look on her mother’s face was one of pure joy.
Kathleen opened the front door, saying, “I’m going to shower. Have you had lunch yet?”
“No, I haven’t,” Sylvia said.
“Would you like to stay? Robbie makes a mean toasted tomato sandwich.”
Surprised by the offer, her mother said, “I’d love to.”
After her shower, Kathleen overheard her mother thanking Robbie for saving her daughter. Kathleen felt a warm, fuzzy feeling overwhelm her. At first, she thought she was sick, then she realized the warm, fuzzy feeling was the result of being loved. She decided she liked the feeling.
Then she heard her mother said, “Do you think you could get her to stop cutting her own hair?”
The warm and fuzzy feeling took a hike. What was wrong about cutting her hair with cuticle scissors? Kinsey Millhone cut her hair that way. Kathleen had gotten the idea from Sue Grafton, may she rest in peace. It saved money on haircuts and she didn’t have to leave the house.
