Chapter 10

“Talk about putting in long hours. I didn’t think you’d still be here.”

Ryan’s comment was addressed to the back of Susie’s head as he paused in the doorway to peer into the lab. He’d been on his way out when he’d doubled back to see if there had been any new findings.

Susie looked up from the high-powered microscope and glanced over her shoulder toward the doorway.

“I could say the same thing about you,” she said to Ryan.

Turning back to the microscope, Susie paused for a second to rotate her head from side to side a couple of times. Her neck muscles felt as if they were starting to cramp up. The tension there went straight up to the top of her head and then spread out. It was beginning to interfere with her being able to work.

“It’s my sister who’s in a holding cell as a prime murder suspect,” Ryan pointed out, as if that explained it all.

“And it’s my findings that made her a prime suspect.” Which was why she was still here, searching for something to disprove her previous conclusions. Taking a momentary break, Susie looked at him again. “Any new evidence?” she asked, assuming that was what had brought Ryan to her lab at this hour.

“No,” he replied, successfully keeping the mounting frustration out of his voice. “Any new findings with the old evidence?”

This was beginning to feel like a table tennis match, she thought. Or possibly a stale comedy routine. Susie sighed.

“No.” Pushing aside her own wave of frustration that was growing within her, Susie had a possible suggestion for the detective before her. “Maybe you should have another go at Greta.”

Bad idea, Ryan thought, her suggestion creating an instant, protective reaction from him.

“And what?” he questioned, wondering just what the woman could be thinking. “Try beating a confession out of her?”

Susie’s temper flared, but she clamped it down, cutting Ryan some slack. It had to be rough, having to accuse someone he cared about of murder. “No, I meant have another go at her about her alibi.”

Ryan looked at the forensic expert, clearly confused. “I thought you were listening in earlier when I questioned Greta. She has none.”

“I was listening in,” she told him. “That’s why I made the suggestion. I think Greta might have an alibi.”

Well, that made no sense to him and his expression said as much. “Okay, if she has one, why the hell wouldn’t she tell me about it?”

Sometimes Susie wondered how men had wound up being the ones in charge of things. They only thought in a straight line and they couldn’t see what was just beneath the first layer.

“Because she’s uncomfortable about it, that’s why. I was watching her face when you asked her if anyone was with her that night. Instead of answering you right away, she hesitated.”

Ryan shrugged his shoulders, not seeing why that was so important. After all, this was Greta, not some crafty, subversive con artist. “Maybe she was just trying to remember if Mark was or wasn’t there on the night in question.
