This morning, while we packed up the tents, Annet took a navigational reading.

“Twenty-three walking days to the inhabited parts of Pikkia,” she announced.

I calculated. We started with twenty walking days and twenty days of food, and we were on the ice plain for five days.

“If you’re trying to do the math,” Annet said, “we have fifteen days of food left out of our original supply. If we ration further, we can stretch that to seventeen or eighteen days, and in the meantime, game has become plentiful.”

She nodded at Ozul, who was now wearing the other bow and quiver on her back, her braids hidden under her hat and hood, her cheeks flushed, and her dark eyes determined.

“There’s less risk of losing arrows here,” said Annet. “So Ozul will join Linny on the hunt. We’ll eat off the land to preserve our supplies. The land here is generous.”

She was looking at each of us, catching every eye. A smile grew on her face, as bright as the snow. A smile!

“Let’s get moving,” she said. “From this moment, every step brings us closer to home.”
