CHAPTER 5

The Music in Me

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

—1 Corinthians 12:4–6 (NIV)

Aubree dreamed about the talent show all night. As she rolled over to face the window, an orange ray of sun crossed her face and woke her. She stretched and looked at the clock. No one was up yet. She lay on her back and felt a gentle, soft breeze coming through the window.

Today is the day. I should be more nervous.

The quiet didn’t last long. Clyde came down the hall on his way to the kitchen for coffee. Aubree yelled, “Hey, Dad, no radio this morning?”

Clyde said, “I thought I would let you sleep a little longer.”

“Dad, I rested so good. Today is gonna be a good day.”

Clyde smiled. “Yes, I do believe it is. Shall I get my radio?”

“No, I’m good with the birds singing this morning.”

Clyde said, “I guess they do have a country twang.”

Aubree said, “Thanks, Dad! You ruined it for me. Now the birds sound funny.”

“Glad to be of service. You should probably get ready. We leave in an hour. Clair is making breakfast for everyone.”

“Okeydoke.” Aubree started to get out of bed but heard the bathroom door shut. She said, “You have got to be kidding me. Randy, I need to get ready.”

Randy said from behind the closed door, “I won’t be long. I gotta go get Shelly before breakfast.”

“Cool. Shelly’s going? I like her. Take your time.” Aubree went back to her room and took her new guitar out of its case.

Clyde walks by the room, glanced in, and saw the guitar. “What are you doing?”

“Oh, Daddy, it’s so beautiful. I never get tired of looking at it.”

Randy opened the door and yelled, “Bathroom is free!” Aubree gently put the guitar back in the case. She gave Clyde a little kiss on the check on the way to the bathroom.

Clyde said, “Randy, I’ll meet you and Shelly at Justin’s in a few.” Randy headed out the door. Dolores came out of her room just as Aubree was coming out of the bathroom.

Dolores said, “Honey, you look great.”

Clyde called from the living room. “Aubree got your stuff?”

“Yeah, but can you grab my amp from the den?”

Dolores said, “Aubree, I would bring a change of clothes for afterward.”

Aubree grabbed her guitar and went to the living room.

Clyde said, “Checklist—guitar, amp, cord, tuner.”

Aubree said “check” for each one. “And I have my music and stand,” she added. “I got it all, Dad. I was going over the list in my head all night.”

“Okay, let’s roll.”

When they arrived at Justin’s house, Randy and Shelly were already there, and there was equipment scattered all over the driveway. Randy was in the back of the truck. He had put a shell on the back to keep the equipment safe from the weather.
